Woodburners (Removal of Carbon) - Dude - {P}

Does anyone know how to remove the black carbon deposited on the glass window on my woodburner.

The unit is working great apart from this problem & I would truly appreciate any advice.

Many Thanks

I had an enclosed wood-burner when I was living in Prague.

I used to use a squirty bottle of kitchen surface cleaning stuff and one of those pan-cleaning sponge pads with the green scouring bit. Scrub well to lift the deposit and then use a spongecloth to wipe off. The green fibre pads don't scratch the glass so you can give it the beans. Chuck both the pad and the cloth in the bin when finished.

Works a treat and doesn't take long, but it is messy. Put some newspaper down first and wear some rubber gloves that don't owe you anything. If you get the results on your hands, even Swarfega won't touch it(!)

Just out of interest, where did you get a wood-burning BMW 3-series......?

Brasso brings it off just fine - disposable latex gloves are a good idea too and remember - do it when the fire is cold - Brasso is flammable

I thought all BMW's were wood burning...

Indeed - as most people know BMW stands for Burns Mostly Wood....

Let's hope Jamie doesn't see this, or he'll believe it to be true and go off on a 1,000 word rant about how unfair it is that his Jaguar insists on unleaded. :)

Just needs something mildly abarasive - Astonish oven and cookware cleaner would be another possibility.

I still think its ridiculous that 4 star was phased out. Oh no cant have lead in our petrol, might encourage others to use it.

WOODBURNERS. I use a product made by H+G bought from Homebase, its made for cleaning glass on sloves. costs about £6.

spray on, leave 5mins, and wipe down...job done, been using the stuff for 5 years with no issues.....

Also helps to turn up the airvents at the end of a burn.....to increase the heat which helps burn off any carbon.

paul.

i have a 7kw stovax. coal/wood burner.

I live in France in a heavily wooded area and we use 2 woodburners to heat our house as the sole source of heat. We are cleaning the glasses just about every day and use a spray called Braisal Power Clean which is also used to clean barbecue grids-so anything that is sold in the UK to clean cookers and barbecues will work. The previous poster's remark about the scouring pad is ok but we use an old worn out one so as not to scratch the glass, then wipe it off and polish with kitchen roll.

My only experience of woodburners is in holiday cottages, but all the instructions state there should be no carbon if the fire is burning correctly. A build up can be an indication the fire isn't hot enough.

The residue I used to get was actually mostly vapourised wood resin condensing on the glass. The soot content was quite low.

It sets like glue, which is why it's a pig to remove. If it were merely carbon soot, it would just dust off.
