Skoda Octavia - 2.0 Auto - any view on this? - softopdriver

I may be looking at a 2.0 Auto Octavia Estate (2003) in the near future. Does anyone have any comments or experience of a.) the 2 litre engine and b.) the auto gearbox? I'm particularly interested to hear about known problems, weaknesses, reliability and economy.

Can anyone help here?

I'm not sure what sort of automatic gearbox a 2003 Octavia has, although I suspect a torque converter type. I have an automatic Octavia but it's the current model which has the DSG.

I should make it a little clearer - it is the 2 litre petrol engine and the old school (torque converter) automatic transmission that I will be looking at. I believe this engine/transmission may have also been fitted to a similar aged VW Passat (and possibly a few other VW or Audis of that era).

My parents owned a 2001 from new one until recently when it was sadly written off.

The 2.0 was a great engine with no real faults except one error logged in it first year(Mass air flow sensor). Reasonably powerful, great for touring Europe. Engine is simple in design which is a bad thing if your priority is up to date efficiency but a great thing if you want older car long term ownership (reliable and cheap/simple to fix). The car never had to be topped up with oil between services. I know an example of this engine in car with well over 250k miles on the clock. For some reason it was also great on tyres (40k+ on a set) - better than my Octavia 1.4 Classic.

Re the auto gear box - It was always reliable and did the job reasonably well. However it may have been my driving style compared to my dads (it uses some sort of fuzzy logic) but the timing of it's gear changes somehow didn't seem to line up with what I was expecting. A few times on overtaking it was reluctant to kick down but when slightly accelerating on a motorway incline it did like suddenly changing down when gentle top gear acceleration was all that way required.

It's economy was not great around town but my dad frequently broke the magic 40mpg barrier on long runs. You really need to be driving over 50mph for torque converter lock up giving maximum efficiency.

All in all a good car though.

Is this the 115PS 8v petrol engine used in Golf's and Sharan's at that time ?

We had this in a Golf IV manual 'GTi' and it was reasonably torquey low down but ran out of breath quickly and 115PS isn't great for a 2.0L petrol even of this era. Economy wasn't particularly great and it used oil IIRC, we also had the lambda sensor fail under warrantee with delays in getting it fixed due to availability of parts for what was then (2002 I think) a common problem.

Personally I prefer the 1.8 20V engine I had in my A4 at the time which was more economical and felt subjectively faster.
