Ah but.............our weans have had mobile phones on contract from about 13 or 14 years old, without running up bills, bank accounts from 14 years old, into which a minimal amount of pocket money was paid by standing order, so that they learned to manage their finances.

Then a credit card each at 17, no funding provided towards, though we stood security..

So far they appear to be managing their money fine

Others dont.

Cheers

Even when i was at school they'd started doing classes under the title of 'PSHE' which had segments about how to be a good citizen, you must use public transport and eat organic food etc. Didnt work on me but the brainwashing seems to be working on some of the kids now.

Its becoming more common though that people dont want to drive or have no interest in it, you cant force anybody to like anything of course but they are going to be handicapped in the employment market as a result. Employers (or the ones ive worked for anyway) like people who can get into work under their own steam, who arent at the mercy of buses and trains etc and with less and less people driving it plays more into the hands of the rest of us.

Jamie,

Wind yer neck in!,

Neither of our two NEED a car, as they are both at University...........and actually I would be most offended iffen I thought they were brainwashed by anybody other than us.

"wor tiddles" is "scowling like a butterwitch" about the stupid amount of time they are required to spend learning? "ethics" and discussing "loss".

(Tiddles is also bored due to lack of course content.)

If ethics need to be taught, that individual should not be on the course.

But then, of course, the current dogma is that one can train a monkey to be a brain surgeon. Virtually.

And finally, I am currently campaigning that they do their "B" + "E" i.e. trailer test, without much success it must be said.

What about when they leave University? The sooner they get a no claims bonus rolling the better.

Sorry i dont speak Dickens i didnt understand any of that.

Jeekers Hi Sur! Jamie,

Your Economics is apparently as poor as your statistical larnings.

Your assertion is like spending more at the sales so as to save more because the discount is better.

Since they will be older their first "own name" insurance quotation will be lower, in the meantime they (& we) will still be saving. So, quids in all round.

& to translate wor=our(Yorkshire? speak)

tiddles= little one/diminutive affectionate whatever, so "our daughter"

scowling = scolding

butterwitch= butter-witch (someone who soured milk /spolied butter)

really you younguns.

& sigh

PS

.................nah, it ud be wasted on ye.

My economics and statistics are actually very good. I am fully aware if they waited until 22 ish the first time quote would be less, not much less though it'll still be a heavy 4 figure sum but the speed in which it will reduce will be quicker, after 2 years they'll be paying less than half. However if they needed a car the year after they finished, in which money would presumably be tight then building up a no claims now, when money is available will benefit them then.

Its quite ridiculous i have to go into this much depth to explain my point due to brutal abuse about my apparent lack of mathematical knowledge (you can criticise me on many things but criticising me on what i do for a living is going a bit far) when no other member would be subject to such abuse. If i explain myself in detail i get accused of writing too many words, if i dont explain myself i get abused due to something you've invented in your head rather than what i actually said.

I get criticised for my economics by someone who cant even speak English. Words really do fail me.

Sorry Jamie, I really do appreciate that you can type; better, & faster & correctly spell a lot better than I.

Some of the thoughts so eloquently expressed though.................I do wonder.

Anyway

Why would money be tight?, in the year after they finish,

Or indeed it might be tight t (or tighter) iffen they ran a car they did not need for 2 or 3 extra unneeded years..........so how could this save money or be financially advantageous?

Ps

I do not know what you do for a living?

I guess that she lives in an urban area so public transport is available, I live in a rural are where buses are infrequent and trains whizz buy on the west coast main line on their way to Scotland or down south. My two daughters were delighted that mum and dad ran a car for them and still are very grateful even though they now run their own cars.

Mrnikko
Attending Uni in Balfast/Jordanstown, with a reasonable train connection to our home town.
And when I took the children off the Galaxy insurance on Monday, that netted me a £1000.00 "cashback" (for the 6months left) however to put them on the Octavia would have been £1400.00 for the 11.5 months remaining.
So I didnt, & when I informed "tiddles" as to the £1400.00 cost she positively squalked "dont do it".
atta girl!
