Hyundai i20 - Starting problem - crate washer

My car will not turn over , just get a click . If I leave it for 30 minutes it starts as normal. This does not happen every time. Dealer unable to trace fault.

Moved to Technical.

Sounds like a loose electrical connection in the igntion or starter: that would explain why it only happens intermittently..

Check earth connections to the engine.

Do the dash lights dim/go out when you get the click? - Could be as simple as a faulty battery, I have known them fail with an intermittent failing internal electrical joint going open circuit on high load (starter) but showing a full charge with voltmeter

No everythig is ok(Windows etc). Had a new radio fitted when this first occurred and its been alright for 5 months until now. It could have coincidence both events happing at the same time.

You need to check if there is voltage at the starter motor when you try to start if yes then the problem is with the motor if not then the odds are a relay is not working.I am astounded to hear that the garage cannot find the fault with the car in front of them and all the test equipment available.

I'm suspicious the new radio wasn't a coincidence.

1)Any thing disturbed at the time? e.g. under dash earth connection

2)I don't know about Hyundai but on VAG cars if you fit an aftermarket radio you have to be careful with installation, wiring and adapters as it is really easy to put a wrong voltage down the k-line with strange results - not least blowing up diagnostic computers when plugged in! - How about trying disconnecting the radio for a while?
