A housemate at Uni recently came in swearing and shouting about her b* car that failed to get her home and caused her to miss an Idlewild gig (a popular rock group. :p )
She said that the diagnosis was critically low oil level and something else, the latter - forget what, being the cause of the non-start.
Anyway, point is, can TRACTOR OIL 'which is thinner but still OK' be used in an M reg 130k Polo 1.0???!!

Erm, don't know the answer, but given that oil is what, a tenner for five litres from Euro, why find out? Sounds like that car has had a lot of abuse.

Never put in any oil where you don't know the rating...ie 10/40 or whatever.
But why do you think tractor oil is thinner?
Some tractor oil is a "universal" that will go into the heavily stressed turbo diesel engine, the similarly stressed gearbox and the hydraulic system....it has to be quite good for that!

I lived on a farm for several years and various 4 stroke engines+motorbikes and even my (petrol!) Fiesta at one point were treated to the cheap oil from our stocks.
Never used universal oil though - The Ford tractors we owned used different oil for the hydraulics and the engines all used diesel 10W/30W. Never had any problems, even with it in the Fiesta but to be honest if she really cares about the car she can no doubt get the correct grade for about a fiver from B&Q...
