economical, reliable car for £5000? - heftyporker

Hi all
I need a secondhand car. I don't want to spend much more than about £5000 because I drive 80 miles a day so it's not worth it. But, I need something very reliable in all weather and which does 55+ mpg (diesel obviously). It is 80% motorway driving too, the mpg needs to be possible at realistic speeds (70-75mph).
Any ideas?

I would highly recommend a Peugeot 406 Hdi. there are quite a number for sale with in excess of 300,000 miles on them which is a very good recomendation in my book. I have an estate which will do 60 mpg + at a steady 60 mph on the motorway. I have driven it about 160 miles today, some A road and about 50 miles on the M5 at 65-70 mph and the overall average was 60.2 mpg. I do drive gently though, even harder driving should give you 55 mpg.

If you want something smaller the 306 uses the same engine but you want the 8 valve 2.0 litre for optimum reliability.
