Jaguar Land Rover have proposed a new site in the West Midlands.

I'm baffled why this has been "announced" today - we've known locally about this for a while.

It doesn't make clear what engines are going to be built there - presumably they want to avoid using Ford/PSA as suppliers.

JLR have no shortage of large engines. But no-body want them anymore and they are certainly of no use in the company car market. They need more 4-cylinder engines like the one in the Evoque and the newer Freelander 2 and isn't one going into the Jag too? Ford/PSA simply cannot guarantee the level of supply that JLR need. There are already rumors that new Freelanders are getting difficult to get hold of as the engines are needed for the Evoque launch.

Numbers of engines isn't the main point - JLR are having to pay top dollar to Ford/PSA for engines so the sooner they develop and build their own engines the better as it will reduce their cost base.
