Are replacement Xenon based headlamp bulbs worthwhile. Apparently they are supposed to give a whiter cooler light which is better than the tungsten halogen yellower light.

Depends what car it is. I always say if it wasnt built with them then it doesnt need them.

Possibly, if your car's standard lights are poor. Is this for your Audi, Roly? I've found the headlights in all my VAG cars to be excellent.

Also, their adjustment is critical as they can easily dazzle oncoming drivers.

People on here know my views about unqualified gorillas fiddling with headlights. Apart from replacing bulbs like for like i always think a professional should do it (you may be a professional Roly so apologies if any offence caused)

As one who's only too happy to replace / fiddle with / align my own headlights, we could have a falling out here.

I don't touch anything where the main and dip are seperate units though. The simple-and-always-spot-on alignment trick doesn't work on those....

If you get the dip aligned correctly, the main should then also be correct.

You need a professional to change a bulb? Oh! Please.

Depending on your skill levels you might want to involve a professional in a bulb change on some Audis as removal of the front bumper is required tinyurl.com/kas3g7z

To be honest none of the headlights on any Audi I have had have been great. Meanwhile the headlights on both of the Focii my wife has had have been very good.

The Xenon bulbs are a direct like for like H7 replacement with no other messing, as opposed to a more complex and expensive HID conversion I was thinking.

Not when they go wrong! Our 06 Volvo V70 is one-eyed at the moment, needing a barrowload of dosh to replace a faulty zenon headlight unit. Weighing up the complications and cost of conversion to your motor plus the expensive replacement bulbs and for what benefit, I would stay as your are.

I am only talking about the H7 xenon filled bulbs, not the fancy Bi-xenon units that you can have as an optional extra, I know on my Audi they would cost a wheelbarrow full of money.

I fitted Philips Xtreme H7 bulbs, legally, to my last three cars, 2000 Vauxhall Astra, 2006 Subaru Outback and 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe - in all cases the improvement is fantastic with light projecting much further up the road and emphasising the cut-off lines on the dip beam - the best £50 modification you can make to a car.

HIDs might be slightly better but not by much and not worth the expense.

I'll second those straight and legal Philips Extremes replacements, in H4 size they have improved the old rectangular headlights in my ageing MB a lot, damp dark nights when the standard lights barely lit the raod are now much safer.

ISTR paying about £20 a pair for them after shopping about, well worth the money.

Fitted a pair of H4 Osram Nightbreakers (up to +90%) to the wife's Mk1 Punto this week. £13.60 a pair from Amazon. H7s were a pound or two more. Possibly not 90% better, but enough to notice a big improvement on the standard halogen and hopefully help avoid the odd pothole.

Absolutely, been using them for the last 15 years. Don't forget to check your headlight adjustment.

Unless you do a full retro fittng - then i'd leave it.

I was thinking of doing it too, but having researched into it, I can now clearly see from the cars on the road who has simply replaced their halogens with a cheapo HID kit, and it doesnt look very nice in 99% of cases.

I just ftted osram nightbreakers plus for £20 a pair - Very nice upgrade and a much whiter and brighter light than conventional halogens. Yes, they still wont be as 'bright' as xenon's but for most people (unless they are visually impaired) they should be more than enough.

I'd give them a go first - if still not satisfied - then maybe look again at the HID kit

The EU requires any vehicle with HID headlamps to have washers fitted too 'so that dirt does not misdirect the light'

For most drivers this means fitting like for like Xenon bulbs into the existing lamp unit is the only legal option

I have HID lamps in my car, when a bult did fail it cost over £100 to replace - dealer fit only. Luckily these rarely fail.

Aftermarket HID replacements without proper self levelling and washers from 1st January 2012 will fail MOT: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?15135-Changes-to-MoT-from-1st-January-2012

I believe that the question is about Xenon replacement bulbs and not about HID units. I am a strong believer in /a convert to Xenon bulbs.

For me they have made a tremendous difference to headlamps - as good as an additional pair of driving lamps in the old days. However I have usually fitted the new (Xenon) bulbs after the old bulbs were a year or 2 old - and I understand that halogen bulbs dull after a year or so. I usually also make sure that my headlamps are aimed correctly which helps immensely. I also try to buy only (the best?) makes like Bi=osch, Osram or Philips, as I have previously found that cheaper bulbs sometimes do not have such a good light pattern.

There are reports that xenon bulbs may last less time than others, but I can't comment.

I fitted Xenon bulbs to Yaris.. about 20% more light.

As far as getting a professional to do it... words fail me...More money than sense is the politest I can think of.

Any - Xenon Replacement Headlight Bulbs worthwhile ? - Paul G1pdc

on my old impreza I bought a pair of bulbs just for spares, after all when one goes the shops are generally shut, its dark and raining.....

the Halfords 10year old employee (well he looked it...) said he'd fit them for £5 each...I said they where spares and didn't take up his offer.....he asked what car I bought them for...told him and he said we don't do those....it takes to long....

so it seems they only fit easy ones....anything they need to remove the rad/grill/headlight etc they duck out of.....hmmm experts ahahahahaha./../.....

paul.

(the 2003 volvo and 2008 lancer we;ve got now are easy one hand operations to change bulbs....even halfords could do it......hahahhaa)

Hello,

I've got Volvo V50 from 2008 and installed the xenons. Not the ones that say 55W and only have 35W. Finally satisfied. I bought them at green-circle.co.uk and over there they've got the proper ones and they just light properly! There was a problem after installation because they're just flickering like a strobocsope. I've sent them an email and they told me what to do and it's done. What a satisfaction! What needed doing?

It sufficed to just add a capacitor to even out the current. The work in total took me just 1.5 hours to complete.

Anyone willing to have a go?
