Hello there,

Over the last few months the car has developed a thumping noise when turning in either direction at slow speed ( ie parking). Full lock doesnt have to be engaged for it to thump.

I narrowed it down to the CV joint so changed the nearside joint this morning (as the noise is coming from that side). Having driven the car home (around 8 mile including some parking) no noise. Great I thought!!!

However, The noise has for some reason re-appeared, though the thump isn't as severe and doesn't occur as often. The track rod ends were changed a few months ago also so it can't be that.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Could be the belt on the power steering pump slipping, I should check that first.

Could be the belt on the power steering pump slipping, I should check that first.

Thanks for the reply. I still havn't had chance to have a look due to work commitments. Would a belt slipping cause the front nearside area to thump? I know a few basics about car mechanics but don't understand your possible diagnosis.

Not specifically the nearside I wouldn't think but you would feel it on the steering wheel with the effect of intermittent power assistance.

Problem now solved. The nearside top strut bearing had gone. Many thanks for other ideas though!
