BMW 525i SE - Selling - RoyD

I'm planning to sell my BMW. It is in very good condition with no damage, 90K miles, MoT to May 2012, petrol, manual, and FSH. The car is Topaz Blue with cream leather, and with the SE spec. What's it worth selling privately?

The best way to find out is to look on Autotrader and see what 525is of similar age, mileage and specification are selling for.

Depends on the model. If it is an E39 (pre-2003) they are almost impossible to give away. There are loads for sale and the only thing in common is that none of them are selling.

I've got a px'd 525i with 80-odd k with full BMW history sitting out the back, lovely thing, drives perfectly, almost literally cannot give the thing away. Worth nothing at auction, bunged it on ebay and had two no show bidders even at sub-£2k finishing price, can't even get a sniff of interest at well under book trade.

The rediculous thing is they are still, right here, right now, fantastic cars which I actually prefer driving to the newer E60 (and, I should all, the market for all but the diesel and sport versions of those is going the same way).

Just to add, to get any interest I think you'd need to be well under £3k. Wrong engine (2.5 no one wants), wrong gearbox and wrong spec (everyone wants a Sport).

I'm sure it is a lovely car but there appeal is almost zero in the market at the moment and there are loads for sale.

I think thats a little harsh Pat, i agree theres limited interest in cars like these now but i dont think he needs to give it away. There'll always be someone who wants a good well maintained 5 series. I think start it at £3495 if its immaculate and see if theres any bites. If not drop it to £2995.

Realistically he'll probably get £2500-£3000 for it but it doesnt hurt to take a punt.

Thanks for all replies. I advertised the car yesterday at £2995.

I hope you get some interest Roy. That sounds pretty fair for it, for where I live anyway. They seem to be popular around here!

These comments may be true if the car was 3 years old, but on a car of this age if its fairly clean with no obvious problems, it is a good and robust motor with a very nice smooth 6 pot lump. If its nice he should easily get at least £2500 all day...This is still a very well thought of car by those that know.

E39 both petrol and diesel can be a very expensive nightmare the engine size does matter it will be reflected in insurance and tax costs. The best one is 2000 petrol the diesels are heavy on fuel and suffer from many expensive problems look on the beemer sites many tales of disasters.I am not anti BMW I own a 520 year 2000 and absolutely mint its worth very little but its not an ideal car to own there are plenty of better cars.

Perhaps but all he needs is one person who wants it and has the money to buy it. 62 million people in this country and all we need is one of them to want it and have cash in the pocket. If you're of a certain age then insurance wont matter on it really.

The First and Only Law of Economics -

"The right price is what some other poor sap will pay".

That's all I've ever known about economics, and all I've ever needed to know.

To be honest Avant you could probably do my job with that in depth knowledge!
