How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

I just went for a little cycle around my neighbourhood, and on the home stretch, I saw 5 BMWs in a row. A 335 (actually a lovely example in a colour I've not seen before), then an 11 plate 740, an early 90s 3 series, a 118d and 520d.

Anyone seen more of the same kind of car in a row than that...?!

So you live where the dealers live? (and I don't mean car dealers)

I live where the footballers live. Although these are probably not mutually exclusive! The nearest car dealership is, alas, a Proton/Daihatsu one but there is a Jaguar one a little further away.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

No. But I bet you can see more than five Fiat 500s in Notting Hill.

How many in a row? - Avant

I was driving my BMW and saw five cyclists in a row. Does that count?

How many in a row? - unthrottled

In Oxford-no.

Elsewhere-yes!

I went to oxford once. Guardian reading cyclist central. They were everywhere! Like daleks! Unbelievable! It was never like that on morse.
How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

Ah Inspector Morse...another spelling and grammar fanatic like me.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

Parking aside-it's a wonderful little city.

How many in a row? - Avant

It has some very pleasant buildings in the city centre - not sure what if anything is achieved there; and SWMBO's Mini was made at Cowley.

So that's something in Oxford's favour.

Bobbin - glad to hear you're a fellow-traveller with me and Insp. Morse re spelling and grammar (although I confess to typos sometimes)! Some of us still think these things matter, as I'm forever telling my firm's trainees. (But that's not a dig at anyone in the forum - we don't pick holes unless there's too good a typo to miss commenting on.)

Nobody likes an internet grammar warrior. It just doesnt matter. And anybody who's only response to anything is to correct spelling isnt worth listening to.

Contract proposals or something, yes. Internet car forum, no. Not important.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

Guess you went to the other place then.

I believe that their Classics faculty is second to none in the East midlands.

Cambridge classics: second to none full stop, of course.

I like the (true) story of the pretentious man who named his house 'Nihil Secundum'. A family moved in next door and called their house 'None'.

Im afraid i dont have a posh fancy schmancy education like you lot i dont know what those foreign words mean.

How many in a row? - davmal
Or punctuation?
How many in a row? - jamie745

Oh get a life for goodness sake.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

I assumed that 'classics' should be capitalised. Howler.

How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

'The other place' - LOL, for want of a better 'word'.

Jamie - this is not all fancy schmancy education y'know. I just feel that it's a point of pride to be able to spell better than other physicists as they're often terrible at writing.

How many in a row? - Avant

Ignore the inverted snobbery, Bobbin - I'm with you.

Physicists don't always write badly, and as a race they're probably an improvement on economists. Rutherford split the atom: economists split the infinitive.

And scientists don't usually witter on at excessive length when there's nothing to write about, which is greatly in their favour.

How many in a row? - jamie745

I was unaware different professions have reputations for how they write.

Indeed. Have you never seen a GP's handwriting?!

It reminds me of a rhetorical question at school.

If Wat Tyler led the Peasants Revolt, did Which Tyler lead the Pedants Revolt?

Of course grammar and spelling are important, they make it easier to get the message across, but in general terms as long as the posts are intelligable then I am ambivalant about the subject. Best to all. Concrete

Unthrotled, I've seen Classics both with a capital C and without - maybe you're right and we should keep 'classics' for cars.

But I'd have spelt Midlands with a capital M. One-all I think!

How many in a row? - unthrottled

Avant, the howler was on my part! Dear me, all this expensive educashun and we can't effectively communicate on an internet forum...

A few weeks ago I was driving from Windsor to Maidenhead and saw 6 or 7 Range Rover Evoques in a row travelling in the other direction and then during the next 2 miles another 30 or thereabouts, maybe more. Thought they looked pretty good on the road except for a billious green example. Turned out it was the launch day - didn't see anybody with their trademark hat though!

How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

Bilious green - that is a great way to describe it!

Seven silver cars in a row. I think silver cars should be banned from sale. And manufacturers pleases how a little more imagination with interior colours/trims. Just black is not a choice. Japanese manufacturers and Seat are both particularly guilty.

How many in a row? - meandering

A couple of years ago I arrived at the Hilton Inn in Leicester around 6.35 am (heading for the gym) and the car park was infested with royal blue Zafiras. There were probably 40 or 50, with several rows of 7 to 10. I imagine a sales conference was in progress.

The problem with car colours is generally people who buy a car new, or even second owner has in their mind what it'll be worth when they come to sell it. So people turn down the bright orange one and go for the grey one. A horrible colour can knock value off of the car, regardless of how good it is. My mother for instance would never buy any car which is green or bright red. People play it safe and go for silver, black, blue, grey etc because its a safe bet that in three years time people will still be buying those colours. The same could apply with houses, paint your mansion salmon pink and it'll knock a few quid off.

Most people just prefer annonymous colours on their cars.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

Bright colours don't age very gracefully either. They generally cheapen the look of a car. I suppose bright colours are like using the bus or looking after geriatrics; we agree that someone should do it-but not us!

How many in a row? - jamie745

Yes there are times when i view the endless blend of grey, silver, black and blue (and the occasional maroon) to be a vulgar display of corporate conformity but then i think 'someone should buy the bright red car...but not me'

How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

I thought manufacturers now did a palette of grey, silver, black, white and the odd maroon or navy because the car buyer has spoken and said that they cannot sell on yellow, green or orange vehicles for as much money as the less conspicuous colours.

Onthe other hand - you rarely see a 'boring' coloured Lambo. They're usually 'look at me' yellow.

Bring back British Racing Green! I have seen a 5-series in dark green. Looked lovely.

We need a 'what colour is you car?' thread as a sort of straw poll.

Bring back British Racing Green!

Noooo! Every Rover 416 was in this colour. It is irredeemable.

How many in a row? - Trilogy

One is blue while the other one is maroon. Tourmaline green was my preferred choice instead of blue.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

Two Rover 416s??

How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

I think (I hope!) Trilogy means the colours of his cars, in reply to my suggestion above. My Mazzy is mid-blue.

How many in a row? - unthrottled

'Mazzy' being a colloquialism for your Masserati, right?

How many in a row? - Bobbin Threadbare

Yeah yeah deffo. The fuel and service costs are killing me. ;-P

I always want to write on the matte black Maserati QP that parks round the corner from me, in chalk of course. 'H.phi=E.phi' or something like that.

How many in a row? - Trilogy

unthrottled, Tourmailine green is not, I believe, a Rover colour.

There's some uncertainty about that
