Hi all.

Rover 218sld 1995, 215000 miles, had 4 years, starts first time, sounds like a tractor, goes ok, 50mpg, wife fed up with it, will need "some" work to pass mot due mot sept.

Can get scrap value £130, reclaim some tax/insurance.

Could put in for mot (£50odd ) and decide then.

Try to sell it (ie local auction). Value ?

any ideas ?

I just had a look on Autotrader - there were only four 218s, a bit younger than yours (1998-9) with very high mileages on all. Two of them were going for around £400, one for £800 and one for over a grand. I had a look at the 216s as well; some of them were going for £1300 ish for a 1999 one with low mileage. It may very well be worth you selling it, depending on how much work it needs for the MOT.

Or you could attach sled rails to it and keep it for it next time it's icy.

You've had good value out of the old thing: the best bet with a car this age is usually to hang on until it needs an expensive repair, and then get what you can for scrap.

In your case this may depend on how long it has to go before the next MoT, compared with the length of time that your wife is prepared to put up with it!

Probably the best replacement if you need something similar would be a Ford Focus.

thanks for the feedback, perhaps it will become a classic ?

I will have a word with my friendly home-based mechanic and see whether to mot it or not. Slightly suprrised at the sale value..

Speaking as a wife myself....be very careful how long you keep it if your missus is fed up with it.

And on that subject, please give us some carefully edited highlights about Mr bobbin...... sounds like a lucky man. Oldrovergirl has very firm opinions on cars and has slowed me down somewhat....

Mr B follows my recommendations about cars as I am the acknowledged petrolhead in the household. I believe that women often get a bum deal in a dual car household, as has been discussed on here of late; the wife will get a tiny little economical hatchback to cram children, their accoutrements, probably also a dog, shopping and things acquired on errands for others, and the husband will have a capacious saloon to glide to work in. So we do develop firm opinions on vehicles..!

We joke about it but its actually so true. When i was selling cars just a few years ago i sold an old Fiesta to some bloke, N Reg one i think it was and it was in 2006 and he said it was a little runaround for the wife. Then i saw what he drove away in. A 54 plate Freelander. And he bought his wife a cheapy Ford. Seriously.

You're right - men like that still exist. But this one may have got his come-uppance when the old Ford started first time every time and the Freeloader spent half its time in the garage.

Little run around the wife, eh? I know someone whose husband bought her Grand Voyager. She hates it because it's too big. Still, if you have 4 kids, and an au pair, and expect not to use a roofbox when you go on holiday, that's a hard life.

I remain thankful that I can have any silly shaped coupe, convertible or whatever...that I like!

The GV is on the other scale - it makes me laugh when I see a woman with a poodle and two little tots loading them into some giant 4x4 or similar.

Well in fairness you dont know what else they use the car for. Might have four kids all with their own instrument and go car booting on a Sunday! Who knows?!

And yes you're right Avant men like that exist, he seemed a total knob to me and the Fiesta wasnt even the best example of one you'd find but it always started. I'd laugh if there was an awkward morning when he had to ask for the keys to the little Ford as the RAC man was towing his Freelander away.
