Mazda 2 / Ford Fiesta Titanium The Same???? - kate355

Hi All,

I have a late 2010 Mazda 2, 1.6 diesel sport. After 8 months I've decided I realy don't like the way this car feels or drives. I've been making enquiries at various garages about a Ford Fiesta,Ttitanium. I took one out for a test drive and loved how it felt and handled.

One garage I called today laughed at me about changing to a Fiesta and said it's exactly the same as my Mazda. This has worried me. How come it can drive so differently if it is exactly the same???? I personally felt that the gears on the Fiesta were much smoother than the Mazda, the steering more precise and the suspension much softer. Anyone have any thoughts or knowledge on this please?

Both cars share the same platform yes but to call them 'exactly the same' is a bit inaccurate as different variants of the same models will differ to each other. I reckon if you drove one just badged Zetec you'd have found the ride a bit stiffer than the Titanium for example. The Focus zetec crashes about a bit compared to the Titanium. But both the 2 and Fiesta are a similar weight, got the same engines i believe specifically the 1.6 diesel, same steering setup and suspension. Tyres and wheels might be different between the two cars you've driven which can have a bigger impact in handling and ride than many people realise.

If the Fiesta feels better to you then get the Fiesta, and with Mazda's well documented trouble with their diesels and DPF issues in recent years most on here will probably advise you to get shot of your Mazda diesel before it goes wrong. As far as im aware the Fiesta pre-2011 doesnt have a DPF apart from maybe on its Econetic models, not 100% on that hopefully someone on here can confirm or deny.

Thank you very much for replying. I wondered if I was going mad and actually imagining the difference. The longer I keep the Mazda the more I dislike it.

I've just read up on DPF. My understanding is this is some kind of fuel filter? I'm looking at buying 2011 Titanium Econetic and assume it has this. Is this a gimmick or a good thing?

Thanks again :-)

Auristocrat has written an excellent post pretty much confirming what i thought. Just because its built on the same platform doesnt mean its the same car. Its not like the shameless badge engineering with GM for example, where you get into a Cadillac and every button is straight from a Saab.

The DPF is a filter, the Diesel Particulate Filter its attached to the exhaust system to remove particulate matter (very toxic gases, much worse than the co2 they constantly harp about) from the exhaust gasses. They're still largely in the developmental stage, with them becoming more common in the last few years. They require quite a bit of maintenance and the problem comes from 'regeneration' which is obviously to 'clear' the filter as it were. To do this the car needs to be driven regularly, on longish trips, say half an hour on a dual carriageway for instance and it should be ok but Mazda have had serious problems with their DPF's, Ford owners in the last couple of years have had trouble with them. Its taken years for the Germans to go anywhere near the idea.

The econetic isnt much more economical than the rest of the range in the real world really. Im surprised you've found an econetic Titanium there arent many around. But 0-60 in 18 seconds is frankly walking pace and slower than the old Fiesta 1.1's from the early 90s. Not to mention the premium you pay for the econetic, they advertise it as saving you £30 on tax and a bit at the pumps but prices start at £250 more than the base model. I'd recommend an 08-10 1.6TDCi Titanium, still claiming over 60 to the gallon but much more nippy, 0-60 time half what the econetic is. Ok i know you dont go from 0-60 often in the real world but the strain and effort to get the Econetic up to speed means that it damages its economy anyway and probably wont be that nice to drive. Even a standard 1.6TDCi Titanium is only £20 to tax and will probably be quite a bit cheaper to buy even if its only a year old. Ive harped on on here many times about if you're going to spend good money on a nice shiny new car, whats £20 to tax it or a few mpg less (still very economical but a few mpg less) if it means having a nicer, better car for your money?

The previous Mazda 2 (2003-2007) was based on the Fiesta/Fusion. For Europe it used the same mechanicals as the Fiesta/Fusion, and was built at the Fiesta/Fusion plant at Valencia in Spain. The versions for the Japanese and Far East markets were built by Mazda at Hiroshima, and used Mazda engines - 1.3 and 1.5 petrols (as opposed to the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 petrols, and 1.4 diesel used in Europe). We have a 2007 (57 reg) Mazda 2 1.4 Capella - built by Ford.

The current Mazda 2 shares the floorpan with the current Fiesta and some engines (I think just the 1.4 and 1.6 diesels). Petrol engines are again 1.3 and 1.5. Unlike the earlier version, the current 2 is built solely by Mazda at their Hiroshima plant in Japan. There is less commonality between the current 2 and the current Fiesta - so there will be differences in the way the two cars drive.

So the current Mazda 2 and Fiesta are as different as the Fiat Grand Punto and Vauxhall Corsa are - similarly both the Fiat and Vauxhall share the same platform (floorpan) and some engines.

Cars can feel very different just thanks to suspension tuning. Compare a Fiat 500 to the new Ford Ka, not only does the Ka ride much, much better, it is in a different league handling wise - both cars are the same under the skin made in the same factory but with bespoke spring and damper specifications. The difference is the Ford suspension engineers knew what they are doing. Apparently Fiat have now sheepishly ditched their hopeless setup for the Ford specifications...

That's really interesting. Thanks :-)

Kate - welcome to the forum. I'm not sure what your annual mileage is, but if it's less that about 15,000 you should consider a petrol engine. New or secondhand, most diesel-engined cars cost more than their petrol-powered equivalents and you need a hefty mileage for that extra cost to be recouped by the better economy.

If there's not much in it, stull try a petrol Fiesta and see which you prefer. Also try a Toyota Yaris for comparison: my elder daughter is on her fourth 1.3 Yaris and loves them.

The new Toyota Yaris and new Kia Rio are on sale from September - may be worth a look.

Hi,

Thank you for the welcome :-)

I'm a community nurse and either zipping down motorways within the area I live or doing stop start journeys. My milage is quite high. I've tried petrol engines in the past but have found I don't get enough milage for my money. I did have a 1.4 diesel Yaris before this "horrible" Mazda but when I came to replace it found they offered a lot less gadgets (yes sorry I'm a gadget girl lol) for more money. I did love the yaris but as they didn't offer what I wanted thought it may be time for a change. My last Yaris had keyless door entry too which was fantastic for me. Being in a dodgy area, late at night and having to find keys is a nightmare and a safety issue for me. Hence another reason I'm looking at the Ford.

Thanks again though

Kate

I still think if you're going to spend that long in your car then you dont want the Econetic, as my post earlier confirmed in every way LOL :) I think those stop start journeys would be very tiresome in such a slow car.

Im wondering why you got the Mazda in the first place, doesnt seem like you have enjoyed this owning experience at all!

I've tried one of those Fiestas (work hired it for me) - I hammered it to Sellafield and I had it up to...a fair lick...on the M6 back down into Lancashire. They've got some serious go! It was a petrol model and, importantly, it had comfy seats for the long journey. it was utterly useless up big hills though. I have a Mazda, for which I traded in a Ford, and the only thing I'd exchange would be the Ford gearbox; I do miss it.
