Isn't it annoying when you see an offer such as "38% off a New Mondeo Zetec TDCi" and then follow up to find out it is not new after all and should be in the USED CARS for sale section!

If it is a "pre-reg and has done very little miles ok if not it is 'cos they are saying new "model" mondeo.. If you don't want it don't buy it, but some people will not see past the "new and 38%off"

Depends on what you mean by 'should be in used section' some of them write 'New Mondeo' as in to mean the new shape of Mondeo, which is in itself four years old now. The other reason they might do it is of course the pre-registration method which dealers have been using since the beginning of time. As im sure most of you know the main dealers have targets on how many cars to sell and more cars will be arriving next year or whatever and cars need to shift so to make their sales figures look better they register them in their own name, they mightve only done a few miles or even a few yards in some cases. Essentially its a new car with a number plate on it but technically 'used' so it goes for quite a chunk off.

If its a 57 plate advertised as 'new' then they mean new shape and its a bit of a stupid thing to write in the ad but have a closer look, if its an 11 plate it might have 5 miles on the clock and a numberplate and be worth a look.

Please don't discourage anyone who turns uo their nose at a pre-registered car.

The less demand their is for them, the better the deals available to those of who are quite happy to save thousands by not having our name down as first owner.

My mum bought an Aygo pre-registered, as she didn't want to wait months for a completely brand new one as her Nissan was packing in. It saved her a good chunk of change and since she'd never had a brand new car before, she wasn't really missing anything anyway by it having 20 miles on the clock!

Well listing errors aside that sounds a decent deal for a few month old car nearly 40% off!

As you state here & confirm later ..... the car is not new.

Although to be honest I haven't seen an advert worded

38% off a New Mondeo Zetec TDCi

It tends to be "38% less, compared to new". Playing with words I know, but that's how they get around the advertising standards.

But then again the car trade always has & I guess always will play to the gullible

Another armchair expert.

It always makes me smile to read ads in Spanish papers and magazines for cars which are not actually new but "semi-nuevo" (semi-new), i.e. pre-registered. No one seems to quibble about the terminology, though...

People quoting how much they've saved by buying pre-reg should be taken with a pinch of salt. They're comparing against new RRP prices which for virtually all cars is not's the price paid anyway.

RRP prices are now heavily overdone, pre-reg are usually the same as the best cash prices you'll get (sometimes more expensive) or you may save a few hundred.

Well its true its rare anybody pays the list price, you'd only do that if it was a somewhat rare or specialist car heavily in demand, in which case some people have been known to pay above the list price merely to que-jump for it. But the fact is just sticking a number plate on it does knock a few quid off and the saving is more notable on the sort of car that the dealers are giving minimal discounts on, small economical hatchbacks or other cars which hold their price really well.
