Just read HJ's story about the ship sinking in the channel with 3000 BMW/Volvo's.
Give it a few weeks and the salvage auctions will be advertising 'lightly flood damaged BMW's '.

Anything covered in barnacles and seaweed doesn't come under the 'lightly flood damaged' section :) Still, I'll give them £500 for a wet S60 T5 if they want. Plenty of wind up here at this time of year to dry it off!!

This is probably good news all round (seeing that no one was hurt). It will all be insured, and will mean extra work for the factories to replace them.

It'll probably amuse the fish too!

The Saab's and Volvo's will be OK as they are well rustproofed, but they might as well leave the BMW's down there. I read recently that more BMW 3 series are scrapped each year, because of rust, than Sierra's. I do know that Ford were dismayed at Land-Rover's build quality when they bought L-R, despite L-R having been brought up to BMW's standard.

Surely there'll be many salavageable parts which can still be used won't there ?

It won't be the only BMW hardware lying around in that particular spot. About sixty years ago, a lot more was dumped there, courtesy of the RAF

Why would RHD BMWs be going to Southampton? I thought all BMWs came into UK via Hull/Immingham to their distribution and preparation centre at Thorne, near Doncaster. I've seen comments on a US BMW website that suggests that the BMWs were destined for there, many of them as part of the BMW European Delivery system, where customers get to collect them from Munich, drive around Europe for a few days, then have them shipped to USA.

not good news all round. Our insurance premiums will go up as a result. Maybe minutely but it all counts

Just what (if anything) is salvageable from these cars? Would the salt water render engines & electrics totally useless or would they be repairable - after being submerged for what will probably end up being at least a week; I suppose interiors can be dried out, cleaned up and sold on, as could alloy wheels, but the cars would all have impact damage from the ship rolling over so no body panels then. Just Curious...

The cost of salvaging these cars would outweigh any profit that could be made on what few parts could be re-used by a country mile.

Presumably, bargains soon to appear on www.fish4cars.com ?

Due to the close proximity of the vessel to the Essex coast I understand all the radios and alloys have already gone !

"but the cars would all have impact damage from the ship rolling over so no body panels then"

- not convinced that all of them will be that badly damaged. Worked on this ship a couple of years back. The cars are only a few inches apart from each other and strapped in with pretty strong straps. If the boat just went down on its side then some might have survived intact (superficially at least)
