nissan primera p12 - Seized caliper - squibsquib

I suspect my calipers are seized slightly in the front. When I jack the car up and spin the wheels there seems some resistance. Does anyone know how to unseize them? Couls the slide pins be seized or caliper? any information would be great. Thanks

There will be some resistance as you are turning the drive shaft and the diff. Do you discs get hot. You need to go for a run an a staight section of road without using your brakes and see if the get hot. It you. The pads could be corroded in the caliper and causing them to stick. Regards Peter

I will try that but sometimes the pedal travel feels excessive. I thought air in the system but then they become fine again. I was thinking maybe the slide pins may be seized. Could I dismantle them and use copper grease? Also I got new pad and discs in the rear calipers and sometimes when I apply the brake pedal I get a kind of squeal from the rear. What could be causing this? Thanks

During the after winter brake clean and lubricate, the condition of slide pins etc should have been checked..:-)

Yes i know no one does it these days, that's why things seize and squeal, probably still caked in winter salt now baked to a lovely corrosive crust.

Strip out, inspect, clean, lubricate, takes about an hour to do the lot the day after a good underbody wash down in April.

CAN I USE COPPER GREASE ON THE SLIDE PINS?

If the pin goes through a hard rubberised grommet then no. Copper ease can be used on the pad support rails but not on the pins. Copper ease can cause the rubber to swell and interfere with the freedom for the caliper to move. The pins should be thoroughly cleaned before refitting. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter. My rear parking brake uses the caliper to stop the rear wheels but was told this was slightly seized causing my parking brake to just pass the mot just. Is there a way of unseizing this rather than buying a new caliper?

The caliper needs to be stripped and serviced. With the pads out the piston freedom can be established. As you to not appear to have worked and brakes and this is a safety issue, then I suggest you get them checked out at an independant garage. Regards Peter
