June 2008 Audi A4 1.9tdi - 53K miles - Clunking noise on gear change 1st , 2nd and 3rd gea - tonnoir

Hi folks

whenever i put the car into first gear there is a clunking noise. The same thing happens when putting into 2nd and 3rd gears.

Is this a sign of a major problem or potential problem?

Is it hard to move the gear lever into gear? Could be a worn linkage. Failing that, perhaps the clutch isn't releasing fully.

Hi

not hard to move gear lever into gear. Sequence is usually = = clutch in, gear change, then noise occurs instantly or very quickly after putting into gear. Seems also to occur more frequently after I have been driving for about 1/2 hour or so.

There is also a slight vibration at idle, constantly. Could the problem be the flywheel?

Returned to dealer who replaced clutch although strangely not the DMF.

Clunking noise is still present, now followed by slight rattle when moving up to 2nd gear.

Another mechanic mentioned it may be some play on or a loose gear differential?

any thoughts?
