Half The Traffic? Or Double The Tailback. - JOGON

Former dual carriageway (or part) are now bus lane in and out of town. The few eagle eyed drivers who read the blue compliance signs will note INBOUND 7-30AM TO 9-30AM MONDAY TO FRIDAY. NO OTHER DAYS/TIMES. AND OUTBOUND 4-30PM TO 6-30PM MONDAY TO FRIDAY. NO OTHER DAYS/TIMES.

You may overtake on the left when
  • Traffic in both lanes is moving slowly and traffic in the left-hand lane is moving more quickly than the traffic in the right-hand lane.

Reduce delay and expense and pollution. Keep left and merge in turn. Isn't the mainroad version of the oblivious and bewildered in central lane of motorway?

Ah, the merge in turn controversy resurfaces! Gloves on, locked and loaded.

It's really the crying shame of the 'Empty (bus) Lane' for the 22 hours that cars can use them....but just don't.

The merge-in-turn thing always amuses. I do and let folks in - on holiday in Cornwall the locals (i.d. car stickers) really didn't want tourists on their roads..France + Britanny then!

Another m-i-t incident that stuck in mind was on the A64 York Road Tadcaster where a crash had closed outer lane of dual. Police and signs asked merge in turn as the queue was 4 miles+, but a Knight of the Road (I won't name the Haulage firm) took exception and placed his rig 3/4 over clear outer lane, creating 5 mile queue and 3 miles of clear outer lane ahead of him before gradual coning for the accident.

An absolute pet hate of mine.....people who regard themselves as good drivers but don't actually read road signs

God knows how many times you can see drivers avoiding a "bus lane" when it isn't a bus lane

The signs at the side clearly state it is a bus lane at 7.30-9.30am - or whatever - which means it isn't a bus lane at other times and anyone can use it.

But the dirty looks you get.....
Half The Traffic? Or Double The Tailback. - Ben 10

Many years ago when Ken Livingston was mayor of London I wrote to him with an idea on the subject of bus lanes.

The trouble was the bus lanes that he created en masse all had differing times of operation. Which is confusing to some. Especially when they are obstructed by buses. Some were certain hours of the day some 24 hours.

So I suggested that tiny LED lights. One red, one green should be incorporated on top of ALL bus lane signage. Charged by solar panels that would be red during operation of the timed lanes and go green on a timer to indicate that all drivers could use them. So you would see a line of red or green lights in the distance. Fell on deaf ears. Probably because revenue generated by fines was set in stone to catch out the unattentive.

Excellent idea. There's far too much ideology involved with bus lanes so that the execurion has little chance of achieving success. Used sensibly theywould work very well.

took exception and placed his rig 3/4 over clear outer lane, creating 5 mile queue.

Nothing wrong with what he did. There was nothing to stop people ahead or behind using the outer lane and thus shortening the queue.

When flow is choked at a constriction-trying to make the non restricted bit more freeflowing is useless. The trouble is that the outer lane becomes a fast lane for people who are too important to queue-and the merge at turn causes the inside lane to become even slower essentially you get get turbulent entry into the restriction=less flow.

A bit selective in your quotation there, you omitted:

and 3 miles of clear outer lane ahead of him
