Ford Focus Diesel - Problem with Engine Management System - gillemor

I have a Ford Focus Diesel, TDCi on an "03" plate which has done about 80,000 miles since new.

I drove my Focus at high speed on a long journey and after about 350 miles the Engine Management System (EMS) light began to flash and the engine began to stutter. Without stopping the engine, I tried to drive off the motorway but the engine just died on the hard shoulder. I restarted the engine, the EMS light went out and I was able to drive 35 miles to a Ford dealership with no further problems.

The dealership did a "diagnostic" on the car and found that the fuel filter (replaced in the previous 2 years) needed to be replaced due to "gunge" and they fitted a new one. I then drove a further 450 miles including motorway driving hassle free. On a later journey at high speed, the car gave a large stutter and the EMS light came on again although the engine did not cut out this time. I took the car to another dealership and they checked the filter but found no problems with it but replaced it anyway. I then drove the car; trouble free, for a further 300 miles.

When I got home, however, I took the car to my local independent garage who carried out an electronic diagnosis but found no error codes. I had the car checked and serviced anyway and, as advised by the garage, had an anti-bacterial engine flush put into the diesel tank. and I then set off on a hundred mile journey. Sixty miles into the journey, the car started to stutter mildly and the EMS light came on yet again. so I pulled off the motorway, switched off the engine and restarted it. It went beautifully for the latest 200 miles.

I don't want to keep paying between £60 and £75 for diagnostics which reveal nothing wrong.

What should I do?

Straight off i know nothing about diagnostics, and i'm not convinced it's anything to do with engine management, common theme that gets this car going each time is a new filter...or rather a filter full of fuel.

Have you owned this car long? If you have did you try to use any bio fuel or veg oil in the tank, if it's recent purchase i'd first be looking at something fuel related, maybe previous misfuel.

My first action would be to buy a new fuel filter, keep it with you and learn how to change it.

Does the car have a primer pump, being a Ford i doubt it, keep a bottle of ''clean'' fuel in the boot anyway, put it in the tank and refill regularly with fresh fuel if you don't need it for the following.

If the car breaks down again, remove the existing fuel filter at the roadside...is it full of fuel?, no?, then top this filter up with clean fuel, offer it up and continue. If it's full of fuel, fill your new one with clean fuel, fit and continue.

This should reveal whether you have a fuel starvation problem or filthy fuel problem, then you can investigate further.

If it's muck then i'd remove the tank and clean it properly, and after disconnecting blow through the fuel lines with compressed air.

If it's fuel starvation you might be better off going to a Diesel specialists instead of the main dealer, i'd be doing that anyway.

Hi, I am having a similar problem with my Ford Focus 55 reg 1.8 diesel manual.

I just bought the car recently with 90k on the clock and had a full service with cam belt, timing belt and water pump change.

Now the light comes on with engine system failure and the diagnostics show it is the fuel rail pressure switch. When im driving it comes on and off and the car slows down when it does come on but only for a few seconds.

If i replace this will it solve the problem?

If fuel starvation is the problem perhaps it be worth checking the operation of the lift pump which supplies fuel to the high-presure diesel pump? Could be the lift pump is weak or has an intermittent electrical fault, or else has a blocked filter?

If that's OK then perhaps the high-pressure pump could be suspect? There was an early problem with these engines in that the high pressure pumps would wear out and fill the fuel system with metallic wear particles. I'd have thought these issues would have been resolved by now although I suppose it's still possible the pumps could be wearing out due to old age or the use of incorrect fuel (e.g: excessive biodiesel blends or veg oil). The HP pump relies on the lubricating properties of the diesel fuel and Ford do not recommend using more than 5% biodiesel.

Thanks but the diagnostics does clearly say something about the fuel rail pressure switch. When I took it back to the garage they said it might be that but were not sure..... I dont want to end up buying that to find out that its something else...

The diagnostic may he highlighting a rail pressure problem but the cause may not be a faulty switch. The pressure can only be attained if sufficient fuel is being supplied ( blocked filter, faulty low pressure tank pump, air in the fuel ), or because pressure is being lost ( faulty high pressure pump, leaking injector, faulty pressure regulator).

I would take it to a diesel specialist or you could be throwing good money after bad.

But if a full service has been done and all other faults cleared from the diagnostics test then surely this should be the problem if it is still on there right?

No, the diagnostic code just tells you what the problem is ie low fuel rail pressure, not what is causing it. See my post above for possible causes.
