FIAT Punto - difficulty in unlocking the steering lock

FIAT Punto - difficulty in unlocking the steering lock - divebuddy

The steering lock on my wifes Fiat Punto is difficult to unlock. She has to struggle with the steering lock and eventually it works. She is worried that she may break the key in the barrel. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing the problem. Is it a known or common issue. Would it be a simple case of replaceing the barrel with a new one?

Well worth a try turning the steering wheel a couple of inches from side to side whilst trying to turn the key. I learnt about that the embarrassing way.

Run a small drop of engine oil into the hole and it will sort it out.

Just to add - did this to sort my wife's 04 Punto last year. Makes a big difference.
