Vauxhall Corsa - Corsa sounds like a diesel - a different diagnosis - 1litregolfeater

Posting here as a matter of record.

Usually the stock diagnosis is timing chain tensioner - as it may well be.

However the water pump can fail as early as 40,000 miles and water pump bearing failure will produce a very realistic diesel-like rattle.

So check that first - just disconnect the auxiliary belt by loosening the tension on the big spring with the suitable torx socket.

Thanks for this.

Over Christmas we bought a 2010 1.2 petrol corsa, 15 months old and 15K on the clock, that makes a pronounced tappety noise at idle (audible within the cabin). It only makes the noise when the engine is fully warmed up, not from cold.

It's also been losing coolant from the timing side of the engine, drops are visible on the sump bolts near the crankshaft pulley. I've added over a litre in stages over the past two weeks.

Booked into the dealers next week for confirmation of diagnosis. Judging from the UK Corsa forums, this is a fairly common problem -- lots of water pump replacements on this engine and the 1.4.
