What did you learn to drive in? - Bobbin Threadbare

Someone pointed me in the direction of an article about a Ferrari 458 Italia which has been spotted with 'L' plates. There is accompanying Youtube footage. Apparently a genuine learner.

I learnt to drive firstly in a 1.0L Corsa and then a 1.4L Jazz (in which I passed my test), with some practise in between lessons in a 1.6L Focus. I'm sure it's true for many that a 5L 458 would be quite a handful to learn in. Especially funny when overall pedal control is poor and the car 'bunny hops'.

1963/4 Ford Corsair 1500ohv 4 speed Aqua blue it was, and a school car, Orange 1978 Mazda 323. Bit of a difference the Corsair was a bit on th eheavy side and the Mazda felt like it was made of rice paper.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. Usually, crap cars are harder to drive than expensive ones. I cut my teeth on a Renault Megane, and a Honda Concerto. The Concerto would bog and stumble during gear changes until the manifold warmed up-it was a carby! The Renault stalled if you looked at the clutch the wrong way. Compared to these old plugs, my instructors new Dci Clio was a doddle to drive.

Started in a Triumph Herald round the school playground when I was 16 thanks to a forward thinking teacher who took it on himself to put a pre-driving course together for those who were interested.

First car on the road was a Mini Clubman which was superceded by a Hillman Hunter. The Hillman was much more forgiving than the Mini and had the added bonus of the handbrake being on the drivers right - where the examiner couldn't see it. Useful on my test as I forgot to apply the handbrake at one point, but did make a point of releasing it!

How much more useful than General Studies. No doubt, this would be frowned upon nowadays. Liability concerns, encouraging unenvironmental behaviour etc.

I remember a parent volunteer teaching cub scouts to drive in his car on cub camp. The lads loved it-what 10 year old wouldn't!

Austin Maxi Mk.I. Yes, with the cable operated gear change that went "clonk".

Most people I knew agreed that I really deserved to pass after that.

First one with an instructor was a late Peugeot 306, then she switched to a Clio II which was horrible. I switched instructors at some point and it was a Corsa with them which i passed in.

Circa 1970 Transit pick up with the tarmac ripping Perkins 4108 engine....:-)

So neglected that when it finally got serviced after umpteen years a stick had to poked through the crud blocking the sump bung area to start the treacle flowing.

First two lessons in a 850 Mini with a 'fishing rod' for a gear lever. Then my instructor got a Vauxhall Viva with a lovely stubby gear lever which was great to use. It was 'D' reg, that is 'D' as the last letter of the reg number. Six lessons then the test. Passed first time. The cost was 17 shillings and 6 pence a lesson and £1 for the use of the car for the test. The test was also a £1. In new money that is 87.5p for a lesson. I did have the benefit of practicing in our company vans between lessons. An old Bedford with column change and 3 forward gears and an newer Commer with floor change with a 4 speed box. Halcyon days of motoring way back in 1967. Things have changed a bit since! Cheers Concrete

87.5p a lesson!!!

My lessons were £19.50 an hour. The theory test was about £30 and the practical about £60.

My first ever lesson was in my dad's Volvo 240 estate courtesy of a driving insturctor friend. I loved it and continued to practise regularly in it alongside having formal lessons in a Citroen Saxo.

I preferred the Volvo....

Hillman Avenger in the mid 1970s. The model with the strange vinyl half-roof. The car was orange and the vinyl roof bit was white.

In fact it wasn't a bad car to drive. To this day I still reckon it was one of the best I've ever driven for heel-and-toe use of the clutch pedal.

I honestly can't remember, but my first car was a Triumph Herald estate, 3283 VU, £35....

I bet the number would be worth more than the car these days.

This is a Ford Galaxie, much favoured in 7 litre form in saloon races in the early sixties. Not to be compared with the bulbous MPV named Galaxy.

Good thing it wasn't a Zephyr Mark IV, Brum - the one with a bonnet that stretched out in front of you like a football pitch.

I learned to drive in my mum's Morris 1100 - nice and easy to drive although the gearchange wasn't the greatest. The column change in my first car of my own - a much-loved 14-year-old Austin A50 - was much smoother.

hi ya. good thread...

.in 1987 I leant to drive in a Austin Mini-Metro 1.3L 4 speed. lived in Amersham and had the test in "Berko".

the afternoon of my test I was informed that the car had recieved a new clutch and gearbox that very morning and it was a little stiff.....blimey was it...the old one you could pull the gear lever at a 45deg angle and slot it into gear, this new one was certainly different.,...to the point that the examiner reached over and said whats the problem i said about the new parts and he said pull over and let me have a go....he did.. and laughed and said carry on,.....i passed hahahaah......

friend at engineering college took the test in his own mini estate...and failed before he even left the carpark.....his car wouldn't start...and the examiner said it was un-road worthy...

my wife learnt to drive in her fathers 2.9 ghia ford grannie 1984. a company car insured for any driver.....quite a few were crashed by learner drivers so the company car insurance was changed after a number of years later....

always makes me laugh when you see huge 4x4s with L plates,,,hmm reverse that round a corner.....what corner as they bounce over it...rear window blocked by a spare tyre or "stop the HS2" and "Support Farmers" stickers hahahaa...

Now there's the other question I should have added...! How many goes to pass?

Pass on the first attempt for me; my major challenge was to beat Mr Bobbin by getting fewer minors. I won ;-)

I learned in a Austin A40 Farina in 1961 - nice looking car for its day. taught my wife in a Fiat 500 - suicide door model with no synchromesh. The Fiat cost £60 and was sold for the reg. no. RDC 210 for the same price. "Restored" examples are on offer for £5000+. I think it packed a mighty 17bhp and was great fun in a terrifying way!

First car I ever "drove" was a Rover P5 3 litre - if driving a car whilst sat on your grandad's lap aged 4 is driving!

We then moved on and aged about 11 or 12 I did a few laps of the local industrial park in his Datsun 120Y.

Then I was old enough to actually drive and learnt in a Mk 1 Fiesta 1.1L passing first time.

I joined the army as a boy at 16 and a half, and in that year of training I did a driving course, the car was a morris minor estate. There were three of us and a civilian instructor. Most of the driver training was conducted in barracks ( old raf base), then onto the local roads around Nuneaton. We were all getting to the point of taking our tests, when I mentioned that would not be possible as I was not 17. Needless to say I was not too popular and from that point spent a lot of time polishing the guardroom floor.

The first test that I actually passed was in a Abbot self propelled gun, this was after badgering the bsm after a night on the lash, told the two of us to meet at the gun park 08:00 Sunday morning. I think we should have had a full license first but no one questioned that. Eventually passed my test in a land rover in Colchester some years later.

I passed my car test in a fairly knackered 1.6 Corolla on a P plate, still in daily driving school service in 2003! My instructor helpfully had the gearbox changed a lesson or two before my test, completely altering the feel of the car. Cat D licence was earned on a short wheelbase Volvo coach with Plaxton Panorama body, on a G plate. Another knackered old beasty, but nowhere near as knackered as the Iveco 59.12 buses I then went on to drive in service!

Well, pedantically, I'd have to say I'm still learning - albeit in ever smaller increments as time goes by.

In the broadest sense though, it was an Austin A30, vintage 1959-60, if memory serves. It cost me £5(!) & was black & about a quarter the size of a modern MINI. For form's sake I'd have to say I only drove it on 'private roads' - but was a callow & slightly delinquent youth then, suffice it to say.

The driving test must be the last vestige of old school learning, and teaching.

As in, do what I say, or you will fail.

I'm surprised they haven't made it easier for those less able to pass a test.
