Can't go wrong with TomTom - those with Euro maps (make sure the countries you're going to are included, or at least available to download from their website).

TomTom European maps vary greatly and may not be as detailed for all countries (I have a Pan European map in mine, but when I bring it to the UK it only seems to have about 2 digit postcode support)

The big advantage is that they guarantee you'll always have the very latest map the first time you plug it in to your computer, regardless of how long the device has been sat on display.

Plus 4 quarterly updates are only about 30-40 quid if I remember correctly.

Yes Tomtom is about the only brand I am aware of well Garmin as well to be honest.

Howerver the helpful guy at Halfords was pushing the Navman,

I concluded intutivetly cos it was their "own brand" ,correctly as I later found out.

However is this any reason to avoid it?

I am not interested in the high faluting gimmicks, just want an easy to use Sat nav

Very happy with my TomTom - used a Navman once and that was once too often, not as intuitive BUT things may have changed. Had a colleague that had a TomTom and it crashed irreparably whilst updating maps (I've had no problems) and he replaced it with a Garmin and recons it's far better. If I was buying again I think I'd look ast the cost of running the Garmin and TomTom over 3 years and be guided accordingly.

As a complete technophobe, I find TomTom to have a very intuitive user interface. The only snag I've found is a tendency to 'hang' during cold start up from a dead battery and the fact that it tends to over estimate short range distances which has resulted in more than a few missed turns! TomTom's idea of 250 yards is more like 50 feet.

My TomTom - a 740 GO - takes forever to find a GPS signal when starting off. Fine when you know where you're going at the start.... OItherwise it's good.

I travel throughout UK and Europe, strongly recommend TomTom, but on the iPhone, the map updates are frequent and free, just gone to version 1.8, plus users can correct any anomalies and share with everyone else, again free. Excellent.

Please bear in mind I am quite a technophobe.

So Tomtom

(i) Either the XXL IQ routes edition Europe, only 2 GB flash but contains mapping of Croatia as standard................£170.00 odd........But I have seen comments that 2GB is a bit light/lacking, existing maps "dumped" when map zones are added.

OR

(ii) The Start 25 Europe, 4 GB flash but Croatia excluded from the detail mapping....again £170.00,..............and/but........ I had intended to try and visit Croatia, .............but I could add the Central or Eastern map zones

sigh

Garmin but with any satnav after the initial free updates,it is better to buy new machine rather than use "paid-for" updates-they're almost as expensive as a new one that comes with updates already in.

Do not buy a Garmin even with their latest maps autobahns in germany are missing and so are many newish roads in both Poland and the Czech republic.Tom Tom have all the roads on and are very upto date.

Thank you Collos25,

I was tending towards the Tomtom anyways ( for no good reason mind)

Still have not pinned down which model from the 2 above, probably whichever is on best offer............................but there would be a reason for that, so then I should buy the more expensive one............................scratches head.
