Do you phone around scrapyards, sell it off for parts or use one of the sites like www.cartakeback.com - I looked at it and they collect the car, sort out the paperwork etc.

Was wondering what other people do?

Depends on your reason for scrapping it - if it's simply old age your local scrap yard will pay it's tonnage value at scrap rates but that usually depends on you getting the car to the scrap yard. They'll probably come an collect but you won't get cash then.

I got £100 cash with collection a couple of years ago-and this old banger didn't have a cat! Doubt that you would get that now though.

The most lucrative way to scrap it is to advertise the parts on a well known auction site with the proviso that the winners come to claim their winnings by disassembling them on your front lawn.

Give it a few months and you'll be a neighbourhood hero, local mayor no doubt with an MBE in the bag

Scrapped a 1996 Renault Megane last year, we took it to the local scrappie and managed to push him to £70 cash. Probably worth more for the parts but breaking the car at home wasn't an option - no space and too much hassle.

I thought you just took it to the scrapyard. I remember my dad having a car he bought for a tenner off a mate and he just drove it to a scrappy in Birkenhead and got £50 for the bits. Bus home.

We've just scrapped an R-reg Saxo. The scrapyard advertised in the local paper. We'd have got £100 if we drove it there. It had a flat tyre, so we let them collect. They paid £80 cash and sent the Certificate of Destruction a couple of days later.

I scrapped my old Mondeo a couple of months ago - finally became uneconomic to repair after years of cheap and faithful service.

Scrap dealers in London were offering between £100 to £170 per tonne on the day I phoned, if you took the car to them. That's more than the "webuyany etc" type people were offering. The scrap people paid in cash on the spot - and certificate of destruction came a few days later. Of course scrap yards are always in "interesting" parts of town so bit of a miserable walk before I found a bus stop to get home!
