I went on the buses in Malta just before they went to yellow paint. It's a shame that such enterprising spirit and the elegant old fashioned buses are going, to be replaced by Arriva ones!! Nevertheless, the Maltese do drive like nutters.

Arriva here in wales could probably teach the maltese a bit.. followed one down my street. watched him hit a car pulling out, He must have "felt it" from the way the car rocked, did not stop, so went after him, told him what he had done, (reply expletive deleted) and told the elderly neighbour what had happened, called the police for him as he had a heart condition, Police actually very courteous, and credit due, arriva settled claim rapidly/ But followed by another inches from my rear bumper at 40mph, who was upset when i told him off at the next lights, so called his company because he had 40plus kids on board. Why do bus and coach drivers drive like this, (so close) when they have scores of people on board?

More homogeneity. Yay.

I can't imagine a fleet of new buses is going to tempt the maltese out of their cars. I would much rather ride on an old Leyland Leopard than a ghastly Arriva thing with its little Scania 5 cylinder and torque converter slipping away. I don't care if it's cleaner, it's soulless! If you're worried about air pollution, perhaps a metropolis isn't the best place to live.

I spent a fair time in Malta during the '70s and often used the buses. Looking at the photos in the link I think they are the same.

They were all very brightly decorated with a little shrines inside with the driver often sitting slightly to one side of his seat so as to let god share the driving. They would also have a little pray and cross themselves before leaving Valletta bus staion.

Even then they churned out loads of smoke and made strange noises. It was a surprise to arrive at the destination considering the state of the things.

I know; that's what got me about it too.

Arriva and Stagecoach are everywhere!!!

Does anyone know what mileage those old Malta buses would have done ?

Arriva, on the other hand, are particularly happy as they have finally found a use for all those doomed ex-London bendy buses!

It sounds as if Maltese drivers haven't changed much! I was last there for a holiday after graduating in 1969, staying with friends: he was the naval chaplain there.

They bravely lent me a car and I somehow managed not to have an accident despite Maltese drivers who did entirely their own thing with one hand on the wheel (sometimes) and one hand on the horn (most of the time). I was cause for celebration in the naval community as something happened to me that had never happened to anyone else - I was given way to in a narrow street by a Maltese bus.

It's certainly a shame that the old buses are going, but something of a miracle that they have gone on this long. It must have been all that praying and the beatific effect of the icons scattered around each bus.

Maltese drive like nutters? I've driven there and I've never been so glad to hand a hire car back. Asked a bloke who knows Malta well which side of the road they drove on. He said they just drive in the shade.

Don' t think all bus coach drivers drive like nutters. I have

just retired after 12yrs of driving buses mainly on school runs.

They may misbehave and have a bad reputation as psssengers. but they are the

most valuable load you can carry.. Any good driver would earn the repect of his regulars

and drive with care.

Word has it the a lot of companies are recruiting immigrants, as they; only pay near basic wages, it was probably one of those you had problems with.

Busdriver, Maltese driving habits are (or were when I was there) a little different and scary to here, be they cars, buses or trucks.

I hope someone preserves a couple of these old buses and brings them out at carnivals etc.

That bus looks very bare t o how I remember them in the 70s. There would have been decorations around the front windows and a lot of stuff inside
