Mazda6 2.0 2006 - Replace wheel bearings - Tally

Hi

My Mazda6 has just failed MOT due to wheel bearing needs replacing, I need to use a garage I have not used before due to my normal independant garage is booked up this week, Can anybody give me a rough idea how much it sholud cost to replace the front wheel bearing and is it true i should change both sides at the same time.

PS This the first ive had to spend on my Mazda in 5 years apart from services

Thanks

Tally

Mazda6 2.0 2006 - Replace wheel bearings - mikej

I got my local, trusted independent garage to replace the front wheel bearing on my 2005 Mazda 6 last November. They charged me £72 for a Mazda bearing kit + £80 labour + VAT = £179.

Needless to say I only did the one side !

Oddly - the pattern bearing wasn't that much less (£60-odd) so I thought I might as well go for the Mazda bearing this time, based on a poor experience with a pattern bearing I put on my Focus lasting for months rather than years.

I'd previously replaced the bearings in the rear drums on my Focus myself at various times for anything from £30 - £55 (£20 for a pattern bearing or £45 for a Ford bearing plus £10 for a local garage to press the old one out and new one in), however I gather that front bearings are harder to change than those in rear drums, hence the labour charge for the Mazda I guess.

Yup. Even with a bearing puller, it can be a swine to get the bearing out of the hub.
