Opel/Vauxhall - Collos25

All over the German press and tv news is the story that GM reallly do want rid of Opel/Vauxhall at any cost even if it means closing down the European operation the company is making massive losses and its market share is dropping, basically they just want out, the German government has said it is not interested in any bail outs. This morning it was rumoured that VAG could be interested as they need production space as there sales are going through the roof.

Opel/Vauxhall - oldroverboy

It has been a few years since GM decided to get rid of the european operations and previous sales have fallen through because the German Government would not subsidise the sales and provide capital. if the business is not viable then why should they? Remember the funds that were poured into BMC/BLMC/AustinRover/Rover over the years. it will be sad for the workforce and the loss of employment in the UK manufacturing industry, but maybe Jaguar/land Rover can pick up one of the plants on the cheap... Otherwise look out for the circling chinese vultures. i have had an astra mk1, mk2. cavlier mk2/3/ eqivalents when I worked for opel in switzerland and they have all been mundane cars, and from the parts side, have seen that they were nice little earners for the dealers before pattern parts hit that maket. Sorry to see them go, No, not really.

Opel/Vauxhall - injection doc

Opel/Vauxhall used to make great car's and some of their engineering was so simple but very clever but they lost the plot when they dropped the Cavalier and produced the Vectra, along with dropping the Carlton and introducing the Omega, probably two of the worst cars they ever produced. All my Family and myself had all had nothing but Vauxhalls for over 20 years but once the above cars came into the picture reliability went out the window and we all ended up buying different makes !

Opel/Vauxhall - Victorbox

Seems it's mostly a made-up story. Opel boss Karl-Friedrich Stracke yesterday dismissed the original sale reports, which cited no sources, as “pure speculation” http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/257637/

Opel/Vauxhall - unthrottled

Since a lot of their cars are designed in Europe, it did seem highly unlikely.

Opel/Vauxhall - Collos25

The same gentleman is in Autobild today saying "fruitfull negotiations have been held with VAG and a Chinese company".He has presided over the biggest ever slump in Opel sales since the company was founded so his job is on the line they have now just 7.8%of the German home market compared with VAG at 22% and the trend is very much downwards where all other German manufacturers have rising sales. The stock market, banks, and sales revenue will decide the future not him.

There may be no truth in any article the German press just same as the British like to stir things up but Opel cannot survive the way they are and without a very large cash injection they are doomed.

Opel/Vauxhall - RT

It's probably another story originating from VAG who are taking over everyone if you believe all the rumours.

The problem with Opel/Vauxhall is the EU anti-competition laws - government support for Opel/Vauxhall can only come from the EC itself, not from individual countries - that's why the German financial support is outlawed unless it's used to support plants in UK, Belgium, Spain etc as well as the German plants and of course the German government won't do that.
