Car shows - Bobbin Threadbare

Anyone doing any car shows this summer? Showing anything cool? Just looking at all the lovely cars?

Do you mean classic car shows? You can google 'car shows' or look in one of the classic car magazines. There are quite a lot of shows and/or processions during the summer.

I always go here: www.classicsonthecommon.com/

I usually take the train as the traffic congestion it causes gets worse each year.

I notice the Daimler Dart on the front page, same engine as the Sunbeam Tiger IIRC.

Thanks Avant - I know ;-)

I am going to the Lancashire Classic car and Bike show :www.classicshows.org/hoghton260611.php and I sincerely hope it isn't raining!

I was just being nosy and wondering if anyone had a showroom beauty hidden away that comes out for these classic car shows!

If anyone owns a classic car let's hear about it, perhaps with a picture if you can cope with photobucket or whatever it's called.

Ah - sorry - now I see the point! I'd thought the thread had come off the bobbin there....

When I had a little money to spare three years ago I was very tempted by the idea of a Vitesse 2-litre convertible - but I'm no mechanic and a seven-year-old Z3 was much more sensible, safer and just as much fun. I don't think it counts as a classic although I hope it may qualify for classic car insurance now that it's had its 10th birthday.

Oh dear you terrible pun-ster!

I have been asking about what others reckon to classics, but I'm probably going to skip it; I've got a motorbike to buy and I really want a MX-5.

Is the Z3 nice? I was surprised to find that they are not unobtainable and the insurance is high but not absurdly so for someone my age.

It is Photobucket but Flickr works just as well - I noticed you had edited ;-)

Hi Bobbin - as a physicist and biker you no doubt know that E = mc² means a Yorkshire person with two motorcycles.....

The Z3 is lovely: versus the MX-5 it's a matter of horses for courses. When I decided not to go for a true classic as a fun car, the MX-5 was the obvious choice, with its gloriously direct steering and tight handling; but my wife found a Z3 easier to get in and out of (we're in our early 60s) and the 2.2 straight-six engine in mine makes a wonderful noise. There's nothing quite like a straight-six. Handling isn't in the same league as the MX-5: the Z3 is more of a GT cruiser than a true sports car, and it has a decent boot too whiuch wil take two weekend-sized suitcases.

See if you can get a test drive of each of them: as I think you're a lot younger than I am you may well prefer the Mazda.

LOL. Avant you just keep coming out with the classic jokes!!

I am definitely going to test drive both - no doubt in the flipping snow!

Nice little review - ta.

The Daimler Dart used a 2.5 litre V8, also used in the Daimler badged Jaguar 2.5 saloon.

The Sunbeam Tiger, however, used a US Ford V8 of 4.2 litres. The Tiger was discontinued when Chrysler bought Sunbeam et al as they obviously didn't want to use Ford engines.

I shall be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for my annual fix. Where else can mortal beings get within swooning distance of Jodie Kidd in a Maserati GT?

I'll be going to the usual car shows in and around Sheffield. There's a small one that has a lovely cosy feeling to it. I might even take the XM along, there's usually no Citroens at all. The XM's not a show car but then it is run daily now.
