After phoning around various local motor factors for a set of 4 disks and sets of pads for a vw golf, i was stunned to see how similar their prices were.. literally nothing in it. Complete waste of time, they must all have the same supplier. Is that the case?

Just felt a bit stitched up so tried ebay, bingo, £25 less delivered next day.

Competition is a fine thing and the beauty of owning a VAG group car is that their overall European market penetration is such that there are loads of pattern spares around.

Tread carefully with unseen parts though - Chinese Replacement Automotive Parts (readily abbreviated) abound.

I hope yours were of good quality - braking components are not to be trifled with.

A convergence in prices doesn't necessarily represent a cartel-it can just as easily represent fierce competition whereby all the factors have beaten their prices down to the bare minimum.

Over time it's easy to tell the difference. In a cartel the prices are artficially high and so the final price is governed by what customers are willing to pay and so it doesn't fluctuate. Conversely a fiercely compettitive market has tiny margins and is extremely sensitive to supplier costs so it does fluctuate.
