Golf TDi 2002 ATD-Engine Code - PD Engine ? - Injector wiring loom - Negger

Attempting to diagnose and rectify problem at long distance on daughters 2002 Golf TDi. Having checked various posts I'm suspecting the injector wiring loom. A fault code reader has identified:

Fault Code: 16687 / 163KWP1281

Valve for pump jet: Cylinder 3 (N242)

Electrical malfunction P1668 Cylinder 3 misfire detected P0303

Would this confirm the likelihood of the wiring loom being at fault ? and/or any other suggestions ?

As I'm going to have to travel to sort it out, I'd like to take any necessary parts (and correct tools) with me. I've seen a reference to a detailed article on www.vwaudiforums.co.uk but have been unable to locate it. Can anyone direct me to any other useful information ?

Sounds very likely. I've changed a few of them at work. They're not difficult to do on a Golf with a transverse engine and not that expensive either.....

Thanks for your reply. If I had the vehicle at home I wouldn't be worried, I'm just concerned that as I'm going to have to travel to do it, I don't want to hit an unexpected problem when I get there i.e. not having the correct tools with me....... 7 P's !

Injector looms are very common and best to replace firstly anyway, however you can also check the injectors with an AVO meter. basically what often happens is the injectors short to the body of the injector. Check with an Ohms setting on the meter to make sure you dont have any continuity between the injector body and the terminals !

This is so often overlooked ! when the injectors develope a short it normally flags up as relay fault !

Thank you all for your input. Much easier job than I had anticipated, and appears to have cured the problem. Only difficulty was removing left rear 10mm rocker cover bolt , absolute pain to get at !

Also checked continuity & short to earth and all appears OK.

This is an early PD with Bosch solenoid injectors. I've never ever seen one of these short to earth - it's the later Siemens piezo injectors which do this, shutting down the engine. The earlier engines will run (relatively) happily on 3 cylinders and would certainly get you home.

Congratulations on completing the job with good diagnosis and advice - that rocker cover bolt is a pain...
