Ford Mondeo Mk2 - Steering Rack fitted -> Dead AirBag+CruiseControl - tom1066

Hi there,

I've just had a new Steering Rack fitted to my Ford Mondeo Mk2

Now the Air Bag warning light is flashing 'one flash' and the Cruise Control is dead.

The garage are trying to say it's nothing to do with the work they've just done...

It was fine before the work and immediately upon driving it away I noticed the warning light.

It's back in the garage now but they are trying to say it's nothing to do with the work they've just done...

Anyway anyone know what may have happened?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like they haven't reconnected the wiring to the steering wheel after it was removed.

Thanks for the response.

I forgot to mention that the Indicators, Wipers and Radio controls are all working OK...

Yeah, those wont be affected when removing the steering wheel.

According to the mechanic he didn't remove the steering wheel, just did something with a bolt down in the footwell...

Do you know for a fact the Steering Wheel needs to come off for a Mondeo MK2 Steering Rack re-fit?

I think they must have ripped all the wiring out from the steering column due to not having taken it off and unplugged all the wires first... hence them not just fixing it this morning and being evasive about it now...

Thank you for your help on this. Any more feedback is appreciated.

Update:

The garage refuse to acknowledge it could have been caused by them.

They say it it just coincidence that the steering wheel has lost it's electrical connection after a steering rack was fitted.

He never took the steering wheel off.

He says it's probably the Clock Spring in the steering wheel.

But it the wheel was never removed why would the Clock Spring go? It's not just a coincidence.

They say to get another garage(s) to investigate and if it can be proved it was caused by the steering rack fitting to invoice them.

Does anyone have any opinions on this? Mechanically? Legally?

Thanks,
Tom

The squib or spiral is the most likley cause, this can break if the steering wheel gets turned whilst the rack is removed. The nature of the set up lower down the colomb does enable an easy rack change and removal of the steering wheel is not required. If the squib has snapped this may be why the CC doesnt work or may be re;lated to a switch on the pedals that could of been knocked.

I would suggest a diagnostic check first just incase its a seat belt pre-tensioner, often triggered by poor wiring after the drivers seat has been moved. Anyone in the trade will remember the problems that occur with just having to move a seat that hasnt may be moved back in years.

To explain the spiral in the elctrics for the wheel can only turn so many turns is iether direction, normally 2.5 turns, if the wheel gets turned one full turn whilst diconnected and doesnt get turned back , then it has already wound the spiral one turn ! then when the rack is fitted and tested it may snap the spiral. The spirals or "Squibs" are fragile and can and do fail at any time and may be that it was weak and just testing the rack lock to lock finished it off.
