Did anybody notice but all the cars I saw arriving for the wedding nobody was wearing seatbelts and with all those police around.Would it stand up in court if you were caught not wearing one that you were going to a wedding.

I would assume technically for that event those roads were not classed as a public highway so it doesnt matter.

Slightly different subject but I wondered similar the other day when a cycle race went past my house in a 30mph limit. Its on a downhill gradient and they were doing well over 30mph. There were support vechicles following that were having to keep up.

Just wondered whether there is a special dispensation or something or whether technically the lot of them could have been done for speeding!

I wouldnt mind if more cyclists managed to break the speed limit then the non-road-tax paying lycra clad nuisances wouldnt be in the way so much :)

Rubbish

The law still applies.

That is why it is not possible to run a closed public road stage rally; it would require a change in the law to enable competitors to exceed the speed limit for the road used.

The Royals have a divine right not to wear seat belts.

It is this right which cost the late Princess Diana and her companion their lives whilst the belted bodyguard in the front survived (just). The other divine right of employing a drunken driver also materially contibuted to the tragic event.

Pity. And much more of a pity that these facts are not openly and repeatedly publicised.

I'll stick to Newton's Laws of Motion and leave Divinity to others.

I think we can safely say on the day of a Royal Wedding outside their own Palace, the Royal family can do whatever they damn well please.

I think they call it a "perk."

It was everbody not just the royals and I did not think they were above the law.

The roads had been closed off so I expect that normal rules did not apply

There are about ten xemptions to the requirement to wear seat belts, one of which is:

"A person riding in a vehicle whilst it is taking part in a procession organised by or on behalf of the Crown."

Also I think you'll find that it was to do with the ages of the vehicles concerned. Seat belts did not need to be fitted until a certain date (mid-70's springs to mind) and all the motors they used were well older than that. Ergo... if seat belts are not fitted, you can't be expected to wear what isn't there. Even in a modern car, one of the exceptions to the requirement to wear a belt is that the belt must be working properly, so you (or the car driver) might be prosecuted for the con & use offence of not working/not fitted belts, but the would be belt-user would not be prosecuted for not wearing it.

Hello, Ludwig, all cars made after April 1965 had to be fitted with seatbelts, but wearing one was not compulsory until 1983. However, most people had got into the habit by the end of the seventies.

If any of the Royals where speeding or jumped a light or any other infringement ,I doubt if a copper would stop them and gave them a lecture about road manners. It wouldn't be his or hers job worth.

Just my thoughts.

While we're on the subject, I wonder what the fine would be in normal circumstances for driving a car with a non standard number plate on the back? Non-standard in the sense of a physically impossible registration (JU5T WED), different to the genuine one on the front and, no doubt, bereft of the requisite manufacturer's markings, BS number etc. If that isn't just the most flagrant attempt to avoid the Congestion charge, I don't know what is...

And for a non-learner to be showing an L plate, too. Outrageous!

Balloons and ribbons! I mean, if that isn't a blatant disregard for H & S regulations... The chance of a member of the public being alarmed by a popping balloon or being strangled by a stray ribbon....

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I once saw during the heady days of the Yuppie 90's -"Actually, I DO own the road!" 'Nuff said.

Happy Honeymoon !!

And I suspect that the Aston driver had partaken of an alcoholic substance.

One law for the very rich.......

But no hard feelings.
