Checking the EGR valve on the AWX is easy and can be done without any dismantling.
The EGR valve is actuated by a vacuum capsule, the top of which is visible on top of the engine to the left (as you look at it) of the oil cap. There is a rubber hose connected to the capsule.
Pull off the hose (with care if it has stuck) and fit a longer length of spare hose. Now suck hard on the free end of this spare hose and you should be able to get the valve to operate. When a good vacuum has been achieved, put your tongue over the end of the pipe and check the vacuum can be maintained.
Finally, release the vacuum suddenly, and you should hear the EGR valve close with a soft click. If necessary, disconnect the large air inlet hose at the "clip" connector so that you can observe the action of the valve stem through the engine intake.
In general, if the engine is not overfilled with oil, does not burn excessive amounts of oil and if you are using ULS fuel to EN590, EGR coking is rare on this engine.

Haynes manual 4279 covers the AWX fairly well - but with a few crucial errors such as a failure to describe the modified cambelt tensioner and the method of setting it. Take some of the fastener torque settings with a pinch of salt too...
