Ive got £1200 to spend on a car. Im looking for something from 2000 on with enough space to seat 2 parents, a teenager and two car seats. It needs to be something that is easy to remedy when things go wrong. i.e no time consuming labour repairs....

The combination of '2000 on' and sub-2k probably limits your choice somewhat and veers into shed territory.

For that sort of money there are many good and well cared for slightly earlier motors about. Volvos, Citroens, Peugeots, BMW, all these were good around that time I think.

Cheap no frills motoring? You need a motor with spectacular depreciation from new.

Big french cars or a Mondeo should do the trick. I ran a 1.8lx Mondeo for a while. Utterly reliable, comfy, roomy and cheap as chips. £2k puts you into a 02/03 1.8/2 litre with 70/80K miles or a higher mileage diesel. I'd recommend the 1.8 petrol myself, drive sensibly and it's mid 30's mpg on a run.

Mondeo is a superb choice. I'll throw one in the ring, Peugeot 406 i had a saloon diesel and it was terrific, ran to very high miles and was bulletproof. The estate is a terrific cheap to buy, cheap to run big car too if you can get the HDi model, good economy, most will have very high miles now but a taxi firm near me has used them for about ten years now with 200k+ on them and still run like a dream. And mine even kept ploughing through three foot of snow without getting stuck once.

I loved that thing so much i am close to getting another one LOL (it was written off when somebody crashed into it)

Yeah I'm on my second Mondeo. First one was a '99 Ghia X, bought for £1800 with 71k, just px'ed several years later at 120k. Just needed normal servicing plus brakes, couple of suspension bits. Was let down by rust/tatty bodywork in the end. Mechanicals + electrics were bombproof. Scrapped with original clutch & exhaust.

I love the Ghia X Mondeo's, my father got one, a 1999 reg, when it was about a year old. Fantastic car. Shame theres not many of them around now which haven't been ragged or neglected.

Mazda 626 or Nissan Primera III. Quick nose about autotrader, you can get these with well under 100k miles for about 1500 quid. I saw a 2001 Primera III with 55k for £1,400! Nice and big and *should* be reliable. I noticed the 626 also has 5 proper seatbelts.

somone mentioned volvo..

.don't look at a V40 estate...I have one, 2 car seats at the back is fine, but getting an adult in the mlddle, is something they will////and have complained about...only for very short trips is this worth doing. (3 proper belts across the middle of the v40)

s60 (saloon, or v70 might be an idea, but at that budget i'd stick to ford..)

v40 year 2000 (phase 1) 97,400 miles apart from standard serving great over the 8 years we've had it...aircon, exhaust,alternator,,,battery!!! all as factory fit 11 years ago...avarages 35mpg from a 2litre. grp10 insurance 2.0 xi model

v40 year 2004 phase 2. (the wifes car, 33,000) first was so good we drove 114 miles to bournemouth to but a another one.....hahaha...average 39mpg grp 9 insurance from a 1.8 sport model (115hp volvo engine not the 122hp mitsubishi engine, the later tends to suffer in the heavy volvo to quote a volvo mechanic i spoke to)

I still maintain that if you wish to seat three people in the back of a car for any considerable length of time then you need to get an MPV as a normal car just wont cut it. Not having the big bump between the seats (hence forcing those in the middle to sit with their knee up by their head) makes the world of difference on its own.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I had an X plate Mondeo when they first brought the new model out and I admit it was nice and roomy but It was a bit of an electrical nightmare which has kind of put me off fords to be honest. As far as travelling reasonable distances go I was only planning on 25 miles at the most.

Does anyone know if 2001 Toyota Avensis are ok?

Brian - for your budget condition is more important than make or model. I'd go for a petrol rather than a diesel, so a Toyota Avensis, Nissan Primera or Mazda 6 are all possibilities - but check that there's enough room in the back for the family.

Also look at the Toyota Verso and Vauxhall Zafira: probably not the Renault Scenic as Renault had serious quality problems in the early 2000s.

Left field suggestion!

1997-2001 Toyota Camry 2.2 petrol saloon.

Very roomy in the back, nice to drive and they just don't go wrong. I still regret selling mine a few months back.

Bit thin on the ground though!

Good idea! When fuel prices are high, you can pick up a big petrol for buttons. If the annual mileage is low, the savings in purchase price more than make up for the poor fuel economy.
