this i think is going to be next car, but not many views have been made on it.
what do people think
i don't think the 190 is an option so i'm looking at the standard 140bhp engine. many people say it's to hard to push for power but 0-60 in 8.7 should be fine?
bear in mind i currently on a 406!
as much information as possible please, cos i can't find much on the internet through search engines.

Toyota - so would be reliable.
Personally, I would go for the Hyundai Coupe.
I think it looks better than the Celica - and with a 5-year warranty you can't go wrong.

Pushed for power I should say, one on the M4 tried to undertake me, I wasn't having any and left him for dead, I was fully loaded with 4 up. Not bad for a diesel estate! It's all the torque you see.

a standard 1.8 vvti is £16500 list however there are some better deals around than this. If you are paying around this figure i would look at the following cars as an option:
Hyundai Coupe - in SE spec its the same price and has 5 year warranty
Honda Civic Type R - ok ok, not a coupe but an incredibly good hot hatch at a price of around £15,500 - money could go towards extras and does 60 in under 7 seconds!
Astra Coupe - Its a vauxhall but you could get a 2.2 Bertone for £15,500 if you play your cards right.
Although what your considering is good for £16500-17000 i would look at a few other ideas if you have the luxury of a good NCB.
BMW M3 Evo - fantastic car, 321bhp, 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds = £15-17k will get you a clean R/S reg with all the kit you could want
BMW 330ci - probably pick one of these up for around £17k now
Audi S4 - very nice, 4wd, 280bhp i think, similar money to the M3
Anyhow, good luck whatever you go for

firstly i must say the old hyundia coupe i didn't like the look of, the new one i was surprised it really looks the part, shame about the badge and depreciation.
secondly, i know i don't understand everyone says its under powered, so how can it get to 60 in under 9 seconds?
is it just other family saloons and desiels are getting quicker.
i'm no charver (north east boy racer) but i would like to have power if i need it, you know how it is.
i really would prefer just the 140 bhp version, but if need be!

again i've kind of already decided on the celica for these reasons in comparison to say the civic type r or evo:
lower insurance group
reliability
badge
sports car
|
not much headroom if you get a sunroof
and the leather seats keep getting nicked by toerags if you get them, suggest this is more hassle than they are worth

Been toying with the idea of getting a Celica myself if I decide to keep my old estate rather than replace it.
Saw a Celica v. Hyundai test comparison on one of the motoring shows not so long ago. IIRC the Toyota came out tops for most things. Sadly, if you're planning on using the rear seats on the Celica however, your passengers will need to be children or contortionists !

as much as i like the celica's looks, i dont really like it that much. My last boss used to have one and he was all mouth and no trousers....i think its got to do with some association with him and also the car only has 140hp and the one he had had all the bodykit, etc...and had pretty crud performance. Provided you dont go OTT on styling i reckon its a good car. The chassis is supposed to be excellent.

Having had to do with Toyotas over many years I am all for them, especially Jap built, and when they forget to produce a boring design it can be a cracker. I may be biased, but HJ says of the Celica, RECOMMENDED!
I've looked at the Hyundai too, and I can see why people prefer them. You need to see and sit in both, and think how long you might care to sit, and get demos.
(Then go for the Celica!)
Let's hear how it goes.

For an unbiased opinion (!) see www.celica-club.co.uk - especially the forum - it's a bit 'Max Power' alas but they do seem to have good useful info.
I know that Evo magazine did a test of the Celica vs a Hyundai about a year ago - they preferred the Hyundai (albeit the V6 model).
For a few brokers to compare price from see my reply to the chap looking for a Citroen for his dad.
I would reckon the Celica was the best new buy and the Hyundai the best used (as steep depreciation would mean a lower price).
good luck!

I'm with Tomo on this, go for the "seeker", but that may be because we both own Supras.
|
that celica club thing doesn't work apart from the forum.
i just can't get the hyundia because of the badge!
any other views on the performance ie ever dusted one or been dusted by one?
|
Course I've dusted one, I've got a Supra.
I said something very stupid about the new Celica once, having just seen one whilst driving a full car,
"those celicas always seem to be driven by young men...or women...and sometimes old men and women as well"
So thats pretty much everyone then, pretty good results for Toyota.
I do wonder whether this high revving malarky would be of any use in day to day driving. Would someone really want to "rev the nuts off" to get any useful performance?

to "rev the nuts off" to get any useful performance?
Yes I would, providing it wasn't harmful to the engine or fuel consumption. I regularly turn my stereo off when an S2000 is in the vicinity to see if it's being driven 'properly' - ie over 7000 rpm.
I love the noise you see, but then I am a young or old man or woman!
Andy22 - I would say you like the car - go for it. It's to some people's tastes and not others because it's quite an extreme looking car. Personally I'd prefer the slightly older GT4.
|
The celica is a good car...i just aint that convinced by it if i was investing say £14-17k in a car. Sure its a NEW car and it has nice styling, but surely something like an alfa gtv 3.0, mercedes clk230k/320 or a bmw 318-328ci coupe would be a better drive and the last 2 cars would hold their value extremely well.
Just a thought
|
i see the last point but i've been informed that reliabilty issues arise even with bmws and mercedes these days, and certainly at a higher cost.
definitely the alfas reliability is not worth the risk.
i'm looking pre owned less than 40k miles, probably about 11k
|
just noticed, there's a new face lift model out now, not that i think it will concern me but it would be interesting to hear, what are the improvements over the previous version?
i understand one is new front end lights, is that it?
