Audi A4 Avant 1.9TDI 2000 - Engine starts then stops, alternator light on - jakeylakey

Hello,

Car has been great and reliable, until this evening I started it up, it immediately cut out, and the alternator light stays on. Happens every time I try starting it up? Can anyone help with the cause of this?

But if it onlt started for a secend then the alternator light will not go off. What is the battery voltage. Is the immobiliser light going out when the ignition is on. Can you hear the fuel pump run up when the ignition is turned on. Regards Peter

It could be a problem with the electronic chip inside the key. Try starting the car with another key. If this works you then need to get a new copy of the good key - in case, one day, the second key plays up. Some locksmiths can duplicate these chipped keys; Audi charge a pile of money for them. If this doesn't work, a diagnostic program like VagCom may find the fault. I had this trouble with my Audi A4 - the trouble turned out to be that I kept the keys in a container near a windowsill and they got hit by the sun very early in the morning in the summer; the heat was affecting the chip.
