Quite amusing, but no mention of the £80k Gilchrist earns or his yearning for a socialist state as mentioned on the FBU website. I wonder why?

the green goddess part was the best IMO - very funny - thanks for putting it on the board so some of us less imaginative members can find items like that with ease :-D

Green Goddess part very funny. But the animation seems to be arguing that because they drive big red (paid for by us) fire engines, they should get 30K. It would take me a month to learn how to do that. Where do I sign? It takes a minimum four years full time to train a teacher (starting salary 19K), seven years full time minimum for an academic, often at own expense (starting salary 18K). I could go on. If firefighters get 30K these other groups should be paid pro rata for their level of professional training and skill.

I thought the best bits were when "Two Jags" smacked Gilchrist in the mouth, and when Tone and John were hosed down at the end.

£80k how can a ill-educated yob like that earn £80? Must get in my car and go home I feel undervalued.

Being an inarticulate and totally inept hasn't stopped '2 jabs' oh, sorry, I mean '2 Jags' rising to the top of the political tree has it ?

I wonder what he gets paid ? (deliberately didn't use the term 'earn' since IMHO he doesn't 'earn' anything!)

It's funny how at both ends of the political spectrum the pigs like to feed from the same trough isn't it !

"It's funny how at both ends of the political spectrum the pigs like to feed from the same trough isn't it !"

The "trough" is being replenished yet again by the poor old taxpayer.

Also, they haven't got the brains or reasoning to see how hypocritical they really are.

What was Gilchrists' £100 taxi fare and the blond all about? I'm sure I heard something about it on R4 yesterday, but I was half- listening.

Entertaining!
Now sack the lot of them.
Fire, Fire, Fetch the Engine!! - Cardew
Well the Armed services showed them how the job could be done with a third of the manpower and antiquated Green Goddesses. Despite their lack of speed the average extra time taken to arrive at the scene of an incident was a couple of minutes.

Consensus amongst troops was that the job was a doddle for most tasks and the Fire Officers provided direction for difficult tasks. Lack of turntable ladders was biggest handicap. Military HGV drivers converted to Red Goddesses in a morning. Boredom was a real problem as well.

We live in an age where it is politically incorrect to say a job is unskilled or semi skilled. So let us accept that a Fireman is a professional and on a par with professional dinner ladies, and their job is as dangerous as that of lollipop ladies who risk their lives every time they step in front of traffic.

Firemen are currently overpaid, under-worked and overstaffed. Now their greed has been exposed let us hope the Government will have the courage to take them on.

Hear hear.
Actually being a champagne socialist l would like everyone to be well paid. Given that isn't going to happen l can think of better places to start than the fire service.

Absolutely.

How long before we hear about the intimidation and abuse of non-strikers, wives and children, that was so widespread during the 70's strike?
Fire, Fire, Fetch the Engine!! - HF
It's already happening, frostbite.

It's all rather reminiscent of another great and enlightened labour union leader who correctly forecast the future of his members and did his best to ensure it happened..

I refer of course to a Mr A Scargill who saw pit closures, headcount reductions etc (now about 10,000 miners produce 11Million tonnes of coal where over 50,000 struggled to produce 16 Million..) and helped Mr McGregor of the NCB implement it.

I am sure Mr Gilchrist has realised his members are overstaffed and he is working secretly to bring the numbers and working practises in line with what is really required.

Sure looks like it:-)

Motoring. Not politics, firemen or miners. Motoring.

As somebody said on an earlier thread on the Fireman's strike:-

"We might as well pretend that this is a motoring forum and discuss such things."

So -----

I understand that the favoured second job of Firemen is as a Taxi Driver; which the carry out on their alternate 4 days off.

When they are deservedly and inevitably forced to give their industrial malpractices they can always quit and take up taxi driving or any form of driving full time.

Having got used to sleeping and watching TV whilst on paid duty I hope they remember that it is dangerous to do so whilst driving.

It is possible that they may be asked to work with part time drivers or, horror of horrors, work overtime. That would really go against the grain.

I am certain that there are lots of driving jobs that get a 2/3rds final pay pension after 30 years. They should be aware though that statistics show that full time driving is a lot more dangerous than being a fireman.

Their laudable concern for the safety of the public is really appreciated. However they really do not need to worry as if they do quit for a driving job, there are 40 applicants for each of their jobs and they can be fully trained in just a few weeks. They will be happy to do the job at the present salary and conditions.
