gunge inside water does this mean cylinder head has gone on van

More likely the head gasket. If its a 1.9 diesel it could be a faulty oil cooler.

to change oil cooler

I think they are quite easy to change, if you unscrew the oil filter, the cooler is the bit it screws on to. You can test it by disconnecting the two water pipes and linking them together. It will take a while for the oil to disperse.

When I have had this problem I fill the header tank to the top and let it slowly overflow, as the oil floats to the top, with perseverance you can get it all out but there will be quite a lot sticking to the inside of the engine so you will have to do it a number of times.

If its not to bad and is running OK otherwise, you can just de oil it every now and again, it won't do a lot of harm, I ran an XM for thousands of miles like that.

hi pete sorry not got back to u been working can you tell me when u link these

to pipes together how long can you run van for and what should you be looking for

You will have to flush the cooling system out several times and even then you won't get rid of all the oil but you should be able to tell whether or not its coming back again coming back again.

throw a dishwasher tablet in it and run it up for a while then let the coolant go they work a treat for getting the oil out and they dont foam .
