Car breakdown cover - bintang

For the first time in years I have to arrange my own cover. Who are the best providers please? I don't need foreign or hire car cover.Years ago I used AA and they were good but I seem to recall a lot of endorsements of GEM on this site.

If Honda you get cover if you use Honda deale servicing.

You need to provide more info to get good answers

The best value at the moment is www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/ which is fully loaded including Europe for £59.

If you want basic recovery UK only then Warranty Direct do a policy at £33.

And it's with Britannia Rescue who I would have recommended in the first place.(£59 one)

I joined Auto-Aid after they were recommended here and elsewhere, but have never needed them.

It's £38 to cover both the proposer's and spouse / partner's car, with either driving.

I can recommend autoaid. Been with them for years. The two times I've had to use them they've been fine. It's pay and claim - both times I used credit card and had refund by return of post (well before credit card bill due)

Read the cover - you'l struggle to find better value cover (especially as a spouse is covered too).

Another Autoaid member here, I've not had to use them, but they get good reports.

I have read that some garages now have an arrangement to bill Autoaid directly so there's no need to pay upfront and then claim.

Find a pay as yo go breakdown cover service - Samlibs

I was with the AA for years via my bank account. I was called into one of their rooms and talked into upgrading my bank account at a cost of £15 per month. The AA membership was an incentive along with travel insurance etc.

I have not broke down in 8 years and I have not used the travel insurance. Ive wasted over a £1000.

It makes no difference which company we subscribe to because all each of them do when we break down is telephone the nearest independent recovery operator to us. This person then comes out to assist us. These vans we see driving around are driven by local recovery operators servicing the recovery callouts of that company. I went to have my car M.O.T'd at my local garage which also does recovery and there were rows of RAC vans in the backyard. I saw one of the mecahnics changing his overalls from company name to another.

Breakdown companies just take the call from us. Middlemen. This is why so many more have sprouted up over the last 5 years.

I only use pay as you go now as you can get recoved from as little as £50. This includes 30 mins roadside assistance and carriage for up to 10 miles.

Some companies charge for membership about £6 and some dont. Just run a search on Google for pay as you go breakdown cover.

Quidco is your friend on this one.....

With cashback, your cover could end up costing you as little as £20 for the year...

RAC via tesco points is how I do it. Is this a blatant waste of tesco points?

Pay-as-you-go may be a reasonable cost if you drive a relatively new car, all you want is recovery to the nearest garage and you never drive at night or away from major routes or population centres.

But if you break down in the middle of the night on a country lane don't expect to get recovered for £50 and probably not any time soon. And you will always have to find your own way home.

Breakdown cover is all about peace of mind. And no, the AA and RAC patrols are not staffed by contractors from local garages who swap vans and jackets. They employ their patrolmen.

Many of the other breakdown recovery firms do use local contractors but you are likely to get preferential treatment through them because the recovery contractors rely on them for woirk and they have to meet a minimum Service Level Agreement which means you always get picked up and you do not get lumbered with emergency callout charges.

Within reason cheap cover is cheap for a reason and you only get what you pay for. I have been with RAC and AA and on the rare occasions I needed them they were very slow to respond. Recently I changed to Green Flag. On Easter Sunday this year I called them out at 6pm and they were there by 7pm and fixed the problem. Excellent service, especially for a bank holiday Sunday. Also I was 300 miles from home and getting worried. Unless other cover comes 'free' with insurance and the like I will stick with Green Flag. Cheers Concrete

After 30 years without without breakdown/recovery insurance (incl regular motoring hols on the Continent) I finally gave in and put the ould Galaxy on with Green Flag ( mostly because our daughter is now driving) only £26 or £36 per annum since the UFU gives a good discount.

But what sort of cover do you get for £36. Is it 'tow you to nearest garage and leave you'?

For me, breakdown cover is only worthwhile if they recover your car to your home and take you to your destination (no distance limit).

If my car breaks down locally, I'd just get a friend to tow me home for a few scoops.

I been with GEM for ages now and have used them several times, mostly through my own carelessness, locking keys in the boot, leaving lights on etc. Every time they have arrived in good time, even Bank Holidays in the middle of Wales, and did their thing and except for a snapped cam belt got me mobile again quickly. Was transported home for the cam belt.

They use local garages and they refund the bill normally by return post on recieving your reciept for the work.

I have to disagree there Lucy, unless something has changed in the last couple of years then the AA do use contractors. I have called the AA out three times in the last twelve year and only once did I get an official AA patrol. The others were local contractors who explained due to the semi rural location it was the most cost effective way due to the small demand. Just for info, I called them out from West Yorkshire not exactly the remote areas of Scotland or the Dales. Glad I have read this post as my renewal is in, and at £144 I think there are some good savings to be made from what I am reading.

I can recommend to you my car breakdown insurance company. It is very affordable and provides all the standard cover with reasonable and affordable prices.
