Ford Escort 1998 1600 petrol - Lost Key - freman

I recently lost the ignition key of my car & have been using the red master key. I later read in the drivers handbook that a new key can be programmed via the ignition lock up to 15 times.

Does anybody know if using the master key as an ordinary key for engine start purposes counts as a programming attempt.

If so how do you go from there as an unprogrammed key costs approx £32-00.

You can use the red key to start the car for an indefinite period ,it does not count as a program attempt.Get some new keys cut (with chip)and the red key will allow you to programme them to the system.Info in drivers handbook. The only problem with using the red key all the time,is if it is lost ,them the whole system will need to be re-programmed.hth

Once again thank you doc.

I obtained a key today & programmed it via the ignition lock O.K. at first attermpt.

I will guard the red key with my life as the consequences of losing it sound expensive.

I assume if it was lost the other keys would still function O.K.
