Do not remove the thermostat, buy a new one complete from VW with housing.

Just sits on the end of the cyl head

make sure you bleed the system well when repaced

DO NOT BUY AFTERMARKET ones, the support for the pin shears and overheats the engine do to the poor quality plastic.

I have replaced so many pattern ones on Polo's with genuine its laughable!
