v98 vw golf 1.4petrol - ticking noise from engine - dinkydunk

in the last few days the car has been making a ticking noise from the engine when idle and increases,in noise and frequency, when the car is moving, i've also noticed that it has begun to stutter when it is cruising at a resonable speed for a while, anyone got any ideas?
