Scrappage or swappage - crjos

Hi - I was wondering if anyone knows of dealers offering a scrappage or swappage scheme at the moment?

Thanks,

Charles

Check with a Nissan dealer to see if theirs is still operation.

Nissan Marshall of Cambridge beginning of Nov I got £2000 for a 19 yr old XR3i under this scheme on a 60 Micra.

Firm made is sooooooo easy. SHMBO delighted.

The scrappage was a bit of a con. The government coughed up £1,000. The dealer stumped up the other £1,000-inevitably this would be taken from a pre existing offer-which would no longer be valid.

So of the £1000 from the government, you must subtract the second hand value of your old car. Now any old banger with an MOT is worth almost £500, so at best you effectively got £500 from the chancellor.

The scheme appealed to the base instinct of greed. It removed thousands of perfectly servicable cars from circulation, and temporarily distorted the market.
The best deals are invariably made without trade ins. Save the dealer the hassle of chucking your jalopy in the auction and he'll be more willing to haggle.

The one positive thing I found about the scrappage scheme is that a lot of these old cars without airbags etc are of the road.Might save a few lives in the future.

Can't argue with any of your points - they are all logical - but I am left with the issue of what to do with my car.

It's an S reg Audi A3 - a fabulous car which I've loved owning for 5 years but now reaching the point where the bills are getting high relative to a value of about £1k (decent condition ones are at 1.5k but mine has a lot of dents).

I'd really like to swap it for something with low running costs and cheaper road tax, but for now the A3 is here to stay.

Very understandable. But work out the economics carefully. A new car will lose at least 50% of its market value in just 3 years-much of it in year 1. Of course if you keep the car for longer than that, the market value is irrelevant. But most people who pledge that they'll run their new car into the ground, get itchy feet after a couple of years.

Fuel economy is famously subjective-but as a rule, anything over 60 mpg in the real world is quite hard to achieve-and will require effort on part of the driver. Short commutes to work will yield significantly less. The measurement miles per gallon is deceptive. It exaggerates small changes in consumption, but disguises big changes in consumption. Heres an example:
Annual mileage 10,000 miles
Fuel cost £1.30/litre or £5.85/gallon (ouch!)

20mpg gas guzzler vs 25mpg improved gas guzzler (20% improvement)
annual fuel cost: £2925 £2340

Annual saving: £585

48 mpg bland car vs 60 mpg fuel miser (20% improvement)

annual fuel cost £1219 £975

Annual fuel saving £244

60mpg sounds a lot better than 'only' 48mpg but you only save £244 a year IF you manage to achieve 60mpg. Your mileage will vary.

A new car will require expensive servicing and possibly higher insurance premiums to reflect the higher market value. You'll need to drive a lot of miles and buy a lot of cheap tax disks to make the numbers favourable. The cheapest car is usually the one you've already got.

Depends what you buy for a new car daughter has a Fiat Panda new £5.500.Easy to service nice little run a bout not expensive to run.I believe the Kia sells cheap also.

What are the odds of someone switching from an Audi S3 to a Kia or a Panda? That's why I always try to compare like for like.

Why not ? depends what somebody can afford I can't look in the OP brain so can't you.

If only it was an S3!

It would be a wrench to move from the A3 to a "box" but this is now a second car as we had to get a bigger one when kids came on the scene, so head can rule heart a bit.

The expense of fuel isn't the biggest issue - it's more to do with running repairs as the car ages. Fixing the electric window motor is coming in at £150, and I've been quoted a similar amount to fix a lock which is no longer engaging properly. The sunroof motor went a while back, but I can leave that due to climate control!
