I had a 520 e39 tourer auto and it was superb in every way I now have a 520 e39 saloon auto and I am looking around for another tourer,I think you will find the 3 series a little small but the mechanics are almost identical.ABS module tends to go on all models eventually its no big problem, look for one with a good service history and check to make sure its correct there are plenty of specialised garages and spare part suppliers by the thousands .Have a look on the various BMW forums for a better feel for the cars, don,t be put of by the radio cassette this can be changed easily I have a Sony usb dvd radio with a multi player fitted, autos are worth more than manuals there are so many different options on the list its hard to find two cars alike mine has a heated steering wheel and no heated seats ,10 air bags ,fully functional steering wheel controls, first aid kit under the passenger seat and angel eye headlights.Out of al the options I would say the angel eye headlights are probably the most useful option as the lenses on the standard lights tend to scratch and go very dull, take your time there are hundreds out there you will not be disappointed .

I much prefer the 530i, you'll be talking E39 at this price range but that should get you a nice late one.

There is loads of info out there (including on here) on what to look for but basically it is:

Suspension: Front can wear, usually manifests as wheel wobble under braking and at about 50-60mph. Rear suspension is air on estates and the airbags can go - check it is level.

Cooling: Radiators often fail, will probably already have been replaced but check.

Heating: The heater resistor goes resulting in no or random fan speeds. £50 fix.

Cam Cover: Gasket goes, leaks onto manifold giving burning oil smell. Very common. Again, an easy £50-£60 fix.

On 1999-2001 models the auto gearbox is prone to lose reverse at about 90-110k miles. This is usually expensive. Doesn't seem so common on 2002-2003 models.

The wheel wobble is usually drop links on E39s, cheap and very easy to change, did my mate's car in about 15mins per side.

Having had three BMWs that required both front and rear drop links the only problem you will inccur is a clonk has no effect on the wheel wobble this is normally caused by worn suspension links other than poor balancing.

I've got an '02 325i SE Touring (wanted a Sport but this appeared at a Trusted dealer at the end of my road at the right price). Ive had it about 20 months and done about 20k miles (now 83k on clock) and touchwood it has been excellent. I'd echo looking at the history closely. I've done oil changes and had to replace two tyres on the rear but nothing else.

It has been an excellent purchase, I find it big enough for my needs. I have a Springer Spaniel but more importantly my sons mountain bikes go in ok with a rear seat folded, along with the football training equipment Im, always carting about. Sure if you want the ultimate load carrying it wont win any prizes but for convenience and a flat load bay its great. Also even on the softer SE suspension it still corners surprisingly well.
