Toyota Avensis 2.2D 2005/6 - Diesel Cold starting - iancoffee
Having trouble in getting a speedy startup from cold:
Engine dies almost immediately after firing up, after the glowplug light goes out.
Needs 3-4 more "plug warm-ups" before the engine fires up revs up to 1000rpm.

Any ideas, before the next big freeze arrives ??!!

thanks

Similar to my Xtrail when minus 15. Car had lain for 3/4 days. Car turned over but would not fire, almost on the point of running but not quite.

Breakdown man connected jump starter to my car and the extra power / made the difference

Next day minus 12 no issue, car runs fine.

Have you tested the glow plugs. Regards Peter

Battery seems OK - it's one of those with colour condition indicators, & it doesn't take long for my battery charger to tickle it up to "full".

Will try to test the glowplugs this weekend with the multimeter......

Brr - it's getting v.cold again !!

Checked the glowplugs - all OK.

I've managed to solve the problem: Unlike the older diesel systems (eg my '51 reg. Berlingo ), the Avensis system doesn't like the plugs, etc to be repeat-heated before being fired up.

* Turn off heater fan, radio, rear demister, etc

* Heat the plugs up just once, listen for the relays etc switching off, then fire up the engine - voila, all systems go. If necessary, repeat the procedure just once more......

Apologies for the delay in replying - have been away visiting family.......

PS I've noticed that the Avensis 2.2D glowplugs are "special ceramic ones" & seem to be available only from Toyota - no motor factors, etc stock them. They'll cost a bomb then !
