01/02 BMW 318i - Failed ABS - boumph

My daughter has the above model of BMW. The ABS warning light is on permanently. We have been informed the ABS unit is governed by a Teves mk. 60 DSC computer which has failed. We have been told that new from BMW the unit would be at least £800. Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives. (Recon. or 2nd hand).

The unit is common with many BMW models plus landrover and others ,itsa very common fault .They can be bought on ebay reconditioned for 200ukp or fitted by most auto electricians for around 350ukp.Find a BMW specialist theres plenty about in the UK they will put you in the picture.I have a 520 had the same problem but I repaired mine myself for a few pounds.The replacement unit needs to be coded in,the car need not be of the road for more than a couple of hours and will run perfectly safely until its done.

Andy can you tell us what was the problem -- was it diaphram or spring contacts? cheers

In my case it was a faulty electrical component ,its normally on the electrical side you will find the fault.I have since heard that BMW in the UKregonise that there is a problem and will supply the unit at a very much reduced price even though the vehicle is out of warranty.

Looks like it can be done for much, much less than £800.
