Hi All,

Company Car choice time! Not the biggest list to choose from but for me and the GF have narrowed it down to a choice of 4. Any views on which to go for/engine etc would be great! I do approx 12,000 miles a year in work and private miles so am finding it hard to say diesel will save me money (cost 10% extra per month for a diesel over petrol. Probably half miles on motorway, half in the city centre.

Choices;

Fiesta - Can afford any spec, looks lovely, reliable, bluetooth, ipod hookup etc are desirable. Cons; The central dash area looks poor (imo).

Polo - Solid, well built car, good repuation, nice quality interior. Cons; Not particularly exciting, no bluetooth available on any spec.

Ibiza - Great looking car, good choice of spec, engines (1.2TSI is v.good value). Cheapest of the 4 so can get bluetooth, extras as required. Cons; Dashboard looks dated, slight 'boy racer' image.

A1 - premium image, 1.2 TSI engine gives good economy, nice quality interior. Cons; Can only really afford the base model without paying above my limit which means equipment is limited.

So I can go for any trim/engine of the first 3 (apart from the Ibiza Cupra/FR)

Any thoughts!....

Thanks!

A Parrot bluetooth kit takes about 15 mins to fit to a Polo so thats hardly a problem.

Personally I would go for the Fiesta no specific reasons other than it looks nice.

Girls motor...perfick choice for Andy!

If image is important, go for the A1: the base model according to the testers has a better ride than the more upmarket versions I should think it's still quite well-equipped.

Is the Skoda Fabia on your company's list? Worth considering if so.

Otherwise it's probably between the Polo and the Fiesta; test-drive what you think you like and then decide. With the VAG cars the 1.2 TSI (105 bhp) or 1.4 TSI (122 bhp) are the engines to go for. At 12,000 miles a year you don't need a diesel unless you prefer the way they drive.

the 1.6 tdci titanium spec is a nice drive

I had a look around the A1 today and it is a typical Audi. A very solid car with money spent on the bits you can't see, as a result specification suffers.

The TDi in the showroom had lots of options as a result it was close to £20k. The Audi options would probably be standard on a much cheaper Fiesta.

I was under the impression that the badge is clearly visible - must cost a packet to make it though, all that shiny chrome...

I am waiting to take delivery on a Polo. If it's the 5 door model made in South Africa you could be looking at a 6 month wait!

Bluetooth is a dealer fit option for £230.

We looked at all the cars in your list apart from the A1 as it wasn't in the showrooms and only 3 door. The Fiesta will date, the ibiza looks great externally but the interior is where you spend most of your time and I didn't think the finish matched the new Polo.

I was in the Audi dealership looking at the A1 this week and it's very nice but the basic model is, well basic and a lot of money!

So for me it's the Polo, great exterior and great interior. However the A1 would be a close second.

Hopefully we'll get our Polo next month. We went for the Tdi as it's £20 tax and should do 72mpg on the combined cycle (ha!) but my wifes company gives us more money the more eco we go so financially it works out better for us than a petrol version even though we only do 6,000 miles a year.

Thanks guys! I think the fiesta will date (internally I personally do not like the 'mobile phone' style dash. I thought the Ibiza dash was rubbish too but on revisit it actually is pretty unfussy and does the job. (not sure about stereo quality though) and is £20 a month less lease for the sport version.

Agreed about the build quality of the Polo, looks good and is a classy car!

Cant beat the build of a Volkwagen.

Laird - what spec did you go for?

VW have been clever splitting the Moda and SE with both at a mid range price but meaning the SEL only gives you 'everything'

Ben,

1.2tdi SE with the following options; alarm/mdi usb ipod/RCD510/Multifunction leather steering wheel with computer/Pearlescent Paint.

Should have added Winter Pack with the current weather!

Laird, how bizarre! That is the one I am looking at as its probably the most competative in terms of price.

A few questions if I may!...

- Whats the engine like - a few reviews says it great, some say its a bit loud and refined? Any view? Whats the sound insulation like on motorway?

- Are you getting anything like the 72MPG quoted?

- I like the look of the RCD510 but assume like you have done you have to pay the extra £110 for the MIDI in order to get the song display etc on the head unit? (which is fine if that is the case). Is it easy to go through playlists off your ipod/phone?

- 355 for the steering wheel seems a bit steep but I am still tempted!

- Does the parking sensor come up on the 510 display?

I was last night looking at the 1.2SE 3dr with 510/Midi/sensor pack add ons!

Complete and utter myth - was perhaps the case 25-30 years ago, if you want a well built car buy a Toyota - other than that all mainstream non-Jap cars are pretty much similar in terms of build. Japanee cars are the best built - However, Nissan have suffered under Renault ownership.

If your waiting for a Polo it could be a very long wait ! one of our friends ordered one 2 months ago and has been told not till spring earliest now and may be later with no delivery date! so i reckon by the time it arrives it could be more outdated than a fiesta

Same dilemma in our household at present.

Mrs RickyBoy currently runs a 1.2 Clio Dynamique (her 2nd Clio) though the NHS. It's nicely finished-off with a few individual extra's that make it stand apart.

The latest Clio equivalent is the Dynamique TomTom. She's not fussed about SatNav as most work related journeys are local and it could be a case of 'one Clio too many', so time to change brand? Stuff she's looked at:

Polo = Very nice and the doors close as on a Golf, but they're quite hard to source in correct spec and the most expensive in this sector;

Mazda 2 = Looks absolutely fine from the outside but a bit 'compressed' in the cabin;

Hyundai i20 = Not sure why she dismissed this;

Suzuki Swift = Just looks too boxy (square) and she knows very little about them;

Alfa Mito = We both agree that they're lovely to look at!

Fiesta Zetec = probably going to be the one as readily available and she's now 6-weeks beyond the 3-year changeover point, but she still hasn't decided ticked the 'YES' box.

What to do...

Yes, toyota reliability and safety is legendary. The recall issues across the world aside.

Toyota get my vote, especially after reading TR-tonys post about engine failure on an 05 landcrusier and Toyota putting their hands up.

few years ago as an independant garage we used to service a fleet of hi-luxes and one of them had a cranckshaft snap at 59966 miles and within 3 days of the warranty period, My first thought was here we go but all they asked for was the paper work to prove we had serviced with Toyota parts ( which we had and could provide ) and two weeks later a new engine fitted FOC.
They may of had bad publicity over re-calls but partly due to the press being OTT and at least once again Toyota put their hands up and rectyfied the situation
I have to say both our C1's which are Toyota have been brilliant.
reading recent posts about VW and Volvo and warranty issues I would have to seriously consider Toyota any day

Yes, toyota reliability and safety is legendary. The recall issues across the world aside.

There is no such thing as a fault-free car, all manufacturers suffer from frequent recalls and get basic designs wrong occasionally, I firmly believe the recent media emphasis on Toyota recalls was US-led in a desperate bid to shore up its virtually bankrupt home-grown motor manufacturers, as Toyota were quite rightly going from strength to strength - uncle Sam didn't like it.

In my experience the VW group are terrible at admitting mistakes, they tend to hide problems rather than issue recalls when they should, eg the tens of thousands of exploding 2 litre PD engines - which they will not even admit there's a problem - let alone do something about it. Toyota on the other hand are generally honourable and are very responsive to issues. Warranty companies do not lie – their very business depends on accurate data – Japanese cars are the cheapest to warranty and have the least number of claims – I'm sorry if this contradicts your badge-snobbery, but it's fact.

Don't get me wrong, I was VWs biggest fan when they built genuinely better cars than everyone else (MK1 Golf era) but more recent VWs are vastly over-rated.
