1999 vectra vs 1996 BMW 318 - change
Hi I was wondering if anyone could give some info on this subject I have a 1999 vectra 1.8 ls and was thinking of changing it to a 1996 BMW 318i se.

Would this be a good move the vectra has 105000 miles on it and the BMW has about 15000 more. I'm thinking the BMW would have better fuel economy as it is the same size engine but pulling a slightly smaller car.

What would most people do on here as I value the opinion due to the advice I received in an earlier post stopped me buying a bad rover 45!

Cheers

vectras have always been heavy on fuel but the BMW may be getting a little old, for what you would save better the devil you know.
make sure the vectra is top notch for best economey.
My SRi 140 used to return 26-29 local 42 on a run driven carefully.

The vectra is a 1.8 ls but has been well serviced, was checking reviews and even the old BMW have great reliability and also chain driven so no belt to worry about.

Owners report 29-30 mpg town driving which is a bit better than the vectra

The sensible advice has to be not to change at all if yours is going well: any marginal gain in fuel economy could be cancelled out by an expensive repair. Any 14-year-old car is a gamble, and a BMW perhaps more of a gamble than most, given the price of parts.

But speaking as one who would never have had a Vauxhall in the first place, I can't blame you for wanting a change. Car buying isn't always logical!

Assuming you want to spend as little as possible, condition is much more important a consideration than make and model: find something that looks as if it's had a comparatively easy life. But if you want something economical and better to drive than your Vectra, I think I'd steer you in the direction of a Ford - Focus or Mondeo. With a smaller body t5han a Mondeo, a 1.6 or 1.8 Focus could be what you need. Alternatively look at a Skoda (Fabia or Octavia).

I understand what you are saying, do you think if the BMW is in a good or very good condition for it's age with service history it would still be as big a gamble being 14 years old I am keeping my eyes out for an octavia as think the focus may just be too small.

I personnally would not change better the devil you know, having said that I own a Bmw 520 and its superb but it has full bmw history low mileage and I new the previous owner. One point spares are abundant and cost no more than a Vector have a look on ebay so do not worry on that point. My son runs an old 3 series 320 saloon and a much newer coupe 330 and commutes with the old saloon around 320km per day and apart from the screen rubber rotting and giving a water leak has had no bother in 2 years.

Not many cars of that age have a full service history, so if this one has it does make it rather less of a gamble. I agree with Andy, and what he says about BMW parts is encouraging and useful to know.

That said, you'd get a newer Skoda or Ford for the same money, so have a look at the alternatives.

Sorry to bother you all again I have avoided the BMW 318i but am now looking at a 1998 BMW 323i, this car has 10 months mot and 4 months tax which is alot more than the last BMW.

Would I have much of a higher fuel consumption with the 323i compared to the vectra? and is the insurance group much more?

Cheers again for all the help.

I think you will find the 323i is in fact a 2.5 litre engine plus I thing it was introduced with a higher output engine than the normal 2.5 and will attract high insurance costs.Ask on one of the BMW forums where they have the exact output of all engines in their reference pages.
