Mitsubishi Carisma 1.8 GDI - MOT Emissions fail - JMM

Failed emission test on MOT yesterday - details below:

Fast idle Test:

CO = < 0.30 0.14% PASS HC =< 200 ppm 256 ppm FAIL

Lambda 0.97 - 1.03 1.009 PASS

Second Fast idle Test:

CO = < 0.30 0.01% PASS HC =< 200 ppm 64 ppm PASS

Lambda 0.97 - 1.03 0.0009 FAIL

Natural Idle Test::

CO =< 0.50% 0.02% PASS

I don't know much about cars so I contacted a friend who does -he said to check air filter first -it looks a bit dirty to me but couldd this make a difference -shouls i take it out all together for re-test. HELP - I've just been laid off and money is almost non-existent!

I have to say that i too have experienced issues with these when carrying out MOT's in the past and they often benifit from a good injector cleaner and an italian tune up just before the MOT and the exhaust needs to be very HOT for the MOT.
My guess is the first test the CAt wasn't hot enough and the lambda fail on the 2nd idle test may indicate the pipe dropped out the exhaust close to the finish or a procedule issue.
Some EGA's are very sensative to the timing and procedure of the CAT test.

When was the car last serviced? were the plugs cleaned / changed?

A good dose of super unleaded and few miles at 60 mph in 3rd might clean the injectors, etc etc
