Mondeo LX 1.8 petrol Estate - Mondeo no water temp, a misfire, no fan.. - Joff

Hiya, I have a 1996 Mondeo LX 1.8 petrol estate and for the first half mile or so judders like mad until it seems has warmed up a bit. Also the water temp gauge doesn't work and I cant remember the fans coming on. Could this be a fuse or the water temp sender? Cheers Joff

temp sensor was always a common issue but needs to be checked rather than guess. Engine needs checking for air leaks as there is an elbow at the back of the manifold that is prone to leaking but also the plugs need checking. remove the plugs and look at the ceramic to see if you can see pencil lines down the ceramic, if there is you need new plugs and leads together! if you change the plugs the tracking that will of occured down the plug will also occured on the inside of the plug cap and will continue to misfire 7 burn the new plugs. use motorcraft plugs as the ceramic is a different size ( larger) making the lead a tight fit reducing the chance of arcing! this is a common mistake by many garages not replacing both together.

Thanks for the reply, I will get a new temp sensor tomorrow and try that first and let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Hiya,

well I put in a new temp sensor and it made no difference. I will change the plugs and leads, but this wouldn't stop the gauge and fan working? Is there a fuse that I should be looking at for this in case they are separate problems?

Cheers,

Joff

Are you sure that you have changed the correct temp sensor? The one for the temp gauge sits right at the bottom of the t/stat housing at around the 6 o'clock position and has a rectangular 2 pin plug.As a quick test,if you disconnect the engine coolant temp sensor (for fuel inj system),sits on top of t/stat housing, engine running, then the cooling fan should start up within a few seconds.hth

Ahh, maybe this is where I went wrong. I changed the one on top of the thermostat housing. I will try your test in the morning and see if I can find the other sensor.

Thanks again for your help.

Hiya,

did the test as you suggested and removed the lead from the sensor that I had replace on top of the thermostat housing while the engine was running. The fan immediately started. I also found the other sensor below the thermostat housing so will replace this now.

Hopefully this will fix things...
